Because of the transfer portal, you could argue that preseason rankings don’t mean as much as they once did, but the first traditional poll of the 2025 college football season released Monday.

There were five Big 12 teams included in the Preseason Coaches Poll with another five lingering in the “Others Receiving Votes” category. Here is the poll in full:

Team
1 Texas (28)
2 Ohio State (20)
3 Penn State (14)
4 Georgia (3)
5 Notre Dame
6 Clemson (2)
7 Oregon
8 Alabama
9 LSU
10 Miami
11 Arizona State
12 Illinois
13 South Carolina
14 Michigan
15 Ole Miss
16 SMU
17 Florida
18 Tennessee
19 Indiana
20 Kansas State
T21 Texas A&M
T21 Iowa State
23 BYU
24 Texas Tech
25 Boise State

A year removed from Arizona State being picked last in the Big 12’s preseason poll just to go on to win the league, the Sun Devils are the highest-ranked Big 12 team in the Preseason Coaches Poll at No. 11. ASU has to replace star running back Cam Skattebo, who is now a New York Giant, but the Sun Devils do return quarterback Sam Leavitt after he threw for 2,885 yards and 24 touchdowns last season in his first year with the program.

A clump of Big 12 programs are in the 20s of the ranking. Kansas State is the first of that group at No. 20, while Iowa State is tied with former Big 12 school Texas A&M at 21. BYU sits at No. 23, and Texas Tech — a program that spent mightily this offseason — will start the year at No. 24 in the ranking.

In an expanded poll, Utah would come in at No. 30 after receiving votes. Baylor is right behind the Utes in that category at a would-be No. 31. TCU (No. 38), Colorado (No. 45) and Kansas (No. 49) were also in the receiving votes category.

Oregon, the Cowboys’ Week 2 opponent, enters the year as a Top 10 team at No. 7 in this ranking.

OSU has four opponents on its schedule in this preseason Top 25:

at No. 7 Oregon — Sept. 6
at No. 24 Texas Tech — Oct. 25
No. 20 Kansas State — Nov. 15
No. 21 Iowa State — Nov. 29
