Eric Morris Tells Brandon Walker What He Thinks Is Possible for the Remainder of OSU’s Season

‘I definitely think there’s a chance we can run this thing if we can stay committed to the process and play our brand of football.’

STILLWATER — Eric Morris has been rather front-facing to promote his new program.

Over the past few weeks, he’s done a handful of podcasts and various other interviews as his Oklahoma State squad has rattled off three straight wins.

Earlier this week he went on the Brandon Walker College Football Show. There, he talked everything from his ongoing war with local armadillos to how big the win against Oregon was for his program. But perhaps the most notable thing he mentioned came when Walker asked Morris what success in Year 1 looks like.

“At our best, I think we’re gonna be a problem for anybody on our schedule,” Morris said. “If we can stay committed to the process and take this thing one week at a time, I think we can win the rest of them on our schedule.

“On the flip side of that, at our worst this year, it was pretty bad. So, yeah, I like way our schedule sets up. Obviously, I like our bye week being this week. We were a little bit banged up, but I definitely think there’s a chance we can run this thing if we can stay committed to the process and play our brand of football.”

That’s a nice level of confidence while still having data to point to if the Cowboys aren’t on their Ps and Qs.

The “worst” Morris mentioned there is the Cowboys’ Week 1 loss in Tulsa, a game the Cowboys mustered just 10 points and 368 yards of total offense. In the three games since, OSU has averaged 46.3 points and 608.3 yards of total offense.

Walker then asked if there is some benefit to having the Week 1 film to show his team how poorly they can play. Morris again noted he watches the Tulsa film once a week as a self reminder.

“In hindsight, I am thankful that it did happen Game 1, and we were able to have a hard reset and come out and be able to change the narrative,” Morris said. “A lot better Week 1 than later on in the season. So yeah, I think our guys have locked into the thought of the practice and the preparation getting us to be able to perform on Saturdays.

“So, as long as we continue to get a week better, this team is still, there are a lot of new bodies on this team. A lot of new faces, so we are growing week by week right now. Same thing with our quarterback. He hasn’t played just a ton of football still in his career, which I still have to remind myself of. If we can continue to do that and not turn the ball over, I like our chances.”

Another Funny Quote

Walker, a Mississippi State fan, asked Morris if his practices were similar to that of Mike Leach, who coached in Starkville and coached Morris.

Morris noted his practices are intense, but shared this funny anecdote on wearing the whistle and a headset.

“A lot of people hate that I call the plays and I still blow the whistle after every play,” Morris said. “One thing that stinks for my assistant coaches is the microphone, I still talk in the microphone, so they have to hear the whistle in their ears. So, they don’t really appreciate the fact that I blow the whistle and have all the communication.”

Hearing a whistle blare next to you can be loud enough. Now imagine wearing a pair of headphones while a guy blows into a whistle into his mic.
