Three of the Cowboys’ five scorers finished in the top 6, four of OSU’s scorers finished in the top 12 and all of the Cowboys’ scorers finished in the top 34 of the 261-person race.
Surprise, surprise, Brian Musau was OSU’s top finisher. He took fourth, running the 10K in 28:41 — about a second ahead of teammate Fouad Messaoudi, who took fifth. Then sophomore Denis Kipngetich took sixth with a time of 28:44.3.
A junior from Kenya, Musau is a decorated distance runner, having won two NCAA championships this year in the outdoor 5K and the indoor 5K. He’s also won three straight Big 12 individual cross country crowns.
OSU’s fourth scorer Saturday was junior Adisu Guadia, who took 12th, finishing in 28:49.7. Ryan Schoppe closed out OSU’s scoring with a 34th-place finish in 29:01.7.
The Cowboys were hovering around the front for the entire race. They took the lead at the 5K mark and didn’t look back.
Musau in particular was running with the leaders the entire race. He was third at the 5K mark and was in second at 6K, 7K and 8k before his fourth-place finish.
This is the sixth NCAA title the OSU men’s cross country team has won, last winning in 2023. Before that, OSU won three titles in four seasons — 2009, 2010 and 2012. The team’s first national title came in 1954.
The OSU women’s ran earlier in the morning and finished 12th.
