What They’re Saying: National Talking Heads React to Oklahoma State’s Win in Morgantown

The Cowboys’ win against West Virginia piqued some national interest.

In the fallout of Oklahoma State’s 41-24 win against the Mountaineers in Morgantown, the Cowboys’ standing in the Big 12 was discussed by many of the major national podcasts. Here’s what some of them had to say.

Josh Pate

Josh Pate had the Cowboys as one of his winners during his winners and losers segment.

“Mestemaker did what he needed to do,” Pate said. “Caleb Hawkins did what he needed to do. They are a legit Big 12 contender. Like, they’re loss — this is gonna be one of those weird things you say at the end of the year — their loss is to Tulsa. So, that’s not a conference game, so they’re still undefeated there. …

“They got an NFL quarterback. They have some big-time players.”

Pate then pointed out Texas Tech’s Nov. 14 trip to Stillwater as a game he’s starting to get excited about.

Brandon Walker

Brandon Walker and Liam Blutman went live late Saturday night to recap action from around the country. It wasn’t front-page news, but later in the show, they got excited for what the Cowboys did.

“You want to talk about a who’s back? I mean they already beat Oregon, but now Oklahoma State,” Walker said. “… Oklahoma State goes on the road, beats an undefeated West Virginia team. And Drew Mestemaker, it’s bizarre how little he showed in Week 1, and it’s bizarre how incredible he has been since. Week 2, 3 and 4, he has been one of the five best quarterbacks in the country, and today he was no different.”

Blutman said it might be a good thing OSU lost to Tulsa because in the end, the result is meaningless if the Cowboys go on to win the Big 12.

On Saturday night, the guys at Cover 3 discussed Oklahoma State as they were predicting what the updated AP Poll would look like.

Hindsight has revealed the Cowboys at No. 19, and they agreed.

“Oklahoma State, into the Top 25,” Chip Patterson said. “Maybe should’ve been already, but you’ve got a win against Oregon. Loss against Tulsa is gonna be an anchor, but good job in an impressive win, pulling away in the second half. A good second-half performance from that Oklahoma State offense.”

Bussin’ With The Boys

Will Compton and Taylor Lewan discussed that the Big 12 is looking like more of a battle royal at the top than had been initially anticipated.

They added that West Virginia is still good, and Lewan started discussing the Cowboys.

“But Oklahoma State, man, I’ll tell you what, that quarterback, he nice,” Lewan said. “This is a nice little ball club out there. Their defensive line is good, too. They’re older, they’re more established, they know what they’re doing, like Stillwater’s got themselves a little ball club right now.”

Lewan said we’re going to know a lot about this OSU team after its Oct. 17 trip to Houston before Compton started talking about how electric OSU’s offense has been of late.

“Over their last three games, they are close to averaging 600 yards of total offense,” Compton said. “Like, they are tough, man. Oklahoma State is playing some tough ball out there in the Big 12.”

Andy and Ari

Like many have discussed, Andy and Ari from On3 talked about whether the Cowboys could contend for a Big 12 title.

Wasserman said the Cowboys could, and before that, he made note of Oregon’s thumping of USC in Los Angeles and what that does for the Cowboys overall resume.

“Obviously as this season progresses, if what we saw out of Oregon is an indication of what the Ducks are gonna be moving forward that, that game and that win is going to age like fine wine,” Wasserman said.
