STILLWATER — The Cowboys’ bye week came with some off-the-field drama among the higher ups in Oklahoma State’s administration.
It started popping off when Tulsa World columnist Berry Tramel put out a column noting that it appeared Oklahoma State athletic director Chad Weiberg’s future with the program was still up in the air after a tumultuous two years.
Many have deemed it a power struggle, that started somewhere around that 2024 Board of Regents meeting that resulted in then-coach Mike Gundy getting his contract reworked following a rough stretch of football and Gundy saying that, “In most cases, the people that are negative and voicing their opinion are the same ones that can’t pay their own bills.”
Gundy was then fired three games into the 2025 season after a 1-2 start and a home loss to Tulsa.
Weiberg was, at one point, working without a contract before finally getting an extension signed, but yet, the rumblings of his job status continued.
During his weekly media availability on Tuesday, Morris was asked about his relationship with Weiberg, who hired Morris last year, and the ongoing drama.
“It’s been phenomenal,” Morris asid. “Super thankful, like I’ve said up here all the time — for him and Dr. (Jim) Hess for giving me this opportunity to go out here and lead this organization.
“Obviously super important for us to continue to build the momentum that we have right now. Obviously I tell my players all the time, you get momentum in sports, you want to keep it. And other people are gonna try to take it from you. I’m not a big social media guy. I don’t read stories. Like, I got so many problems I gotta fix on a day-to-day basis up here. So, I’ve had my weekly meetings with Chad, and he’s been great like always.”
The Cowboys certainly do have momentum, which makes the timing of all this feel rather odd.
Morris’ tenure didn’t get off to a flying start, as the Cowboys went east to Tulsa and laid an egg in a 24-10 loss. But since then, the Cowboys have proved to be a much better team, beating then-No. 6 Oregon 39-31, FCS Murray State 59-0 and West Virginia 41-24 in Morgantown.
The Cowboys host UCF at 11 a.m. Saturday in Boone Pickens Stadium.
