STILLWATER — Halloween is just over a week away, but on his Thursday radio show, Eric Morris described Drew Mestemaker as if he was some kind of Frankenstein monster assembled in a lab.
“Yeah, I think him and Patrick (Mahomes), their recall is phenomenal and their spatial awareness, and so I think those are two of the smartest quarterbacks that I’ve ever been with,” Morris said. “That (they) are able to take something from the meeting room, and they really diagnose it, and they’re able to put it in action right away.
“They don’t need a ton of reps at it, and then I think they see the field like their eyes are always up. They’re always in great body positions to throw the football, even with people around them, and so which is a great characteristic.”
Morris was then asked how his current quarterback compared to current Tampa Bay quarterback Baker Mayfield.
“I think just toughness,” Morris said. “I mean, fiery, competitive.”
Although Morris doubts those are words tossed around by folks outside the football program who meet him on campus or around town.
“Pretty unassuming Drew is just when he talks to people,” Morris said. “He’s so kind-hearted, great teammate.
“(But) We have to cool him down from time to time now on the sideline. So he’s getting to where he likes to talk a little trash out there and have fun with it. And so yeah, I think just their (Mestemaker and Mayfield) competitive character, and like they’ll do anything to win.”
Whoa, Mahomes’ brain and Mayfield’s moxie? If that’s not a quarterback built to strike fear into NFL teams, what is?
The Cowboys head coach didn’t compare him to anything specific when another former Morris QB, Cam Ward, came up. Instead, he talked about how great quarterbacks have a mindset that sets them apart.
“I think the one superpower that Drew has is just his poise with people around him, and so he’s never fazed by big bodies, you know, big 350-pound angry men trying to get him,” Morris said.
The head coach said the great QBs have a sixth sense in the pocket that allows them to keep their eyes downfield when many others get nervous, tuck their heads and bolt for the exit.
In the middle of all the Mestemaker praise, Morris offered some advice, and maybe a somewhat ominous warning to Cowboy fans.
“So just as this thing keeps going, like just enjoy these moments,” Morris said. “Like I mean, scouts, I mean our scout list right now, week by week, is getting crazy on GMs that are wanting to watch him live in action.”
