Oklahoma State, Ole Miss Have Gone Combined 104 Years Since Last Sugar Bowl Appearance

Oklahoma State has only played in one Sugar Bowl in its 114-year history. That came in 1945 when it beat St. Mary’s to touch off a perfect 9-0 season. And you thought controversy was heated in 2015. Oklahoma State finished sixth (!) in the polls after going 9-0. Sixth!

Here was the final AP top 10 that year (and where everyone was ranked throughout).

Indiana finished No. 4 ahead of OSU with a tie against Northwestern (Big 10 bias!) and Navy finished No. 3 with a tie and a loss (WW2 bias!)

Anyway, here’s the program from that year’s Sugar Bowl (actually 1946).

“We are very excited to compete in the Allstate Sugar Bowl, where a very notable chapter in our program’s history was written 70 years ago,” said Oklahoma State athletic director Mike Holder. “What a great reward for our players, coaches, alumni and fans to ring in the New Year while enjoying the world famous food and hospitality of New Orleans.”

Ole Miss hasn’t played in the Sugar Bowl since 1970. So the two schools have gone a combined 104 years since playing in the Big Easy. Maybe that’s why Hugh Freeze was so excited about the game.

“It’s on the bucket list of every coach at Ole Miss to bring a team to the Sugar Bowl,” Freeze told The Advocate. “I’ve heard so many stories from our fans about how they feel about this bowl. They’re really pumped up about it, and so are we.”Next to being in the playoffs, this is the pinnacle of everything we could accomplish.”
