The Missing Holliday

Sports Illustrated wrote a mesmerizing piece on arguably the greatest Cowboy that never was: Matt Holliday.

(Les) Miles was an up-and-coming offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State. His kids grew up idolizing (Matt Holliday), while dad wooed him on behalf of the Cowboys. NCAA rules permitted coaches to make home visits once a week, so, once a week, Miles would take a walk down his Stillwater, Okla. block.

Miles grabbed the pad of paper next to the Hollidays’ telephone and, over meatballs, drew up plays—a lot of pass plays—that he just knew would light up OSU’s Lewis Field. The quarterback’s dad still remembers the optimism that flew around their kitchen table (We’ll lead the nation in scoring!). [Sports Illustrated]

Was this the last time Les drew up a pass play? The Holliday’s and Les Miles’ family on the same block in Stillwater is incredible.

The article talks about some fascinating stories. Oklahoma State having a recruit ranked by Michael Vick and Carson Palmer committed. A legendary story about Stillwater taking down Tulsa Union late and a shoutout to Tom Holliday for signing Daryl Strawberry.

Picky Eater

If Gundy’s staff finds recruits with the prescribed qualities (quiet, loves the game, hard worker), the end result is a roster in harmony.

“That is where it starts with the head coach and his vision and what he wants for this program. That is why we come to work every day with guys, not just Mason Rudolph, but a bunch of guys that, a whole team, that loves practicing, playing the game, going to school, earning a degree, and being around one another. That is what makes it fun and being special and is a good situation.” [GoPokes $]

Yurcich has turned into a veteran coordinator that knows the ropes, his head coach’s preferences and the secrets to a happy offseason.
