OSU Picked Last in Big 12 Preseason Basketball Poll for First Time Ever
When the Cowboys left the court in Indianapolis following its 1-point loss to Michigan in the opening round of last year’s NCAA Tournament, things didn’t look so bad.
Brad Underwood was still the coach. Jawun Evans still might be coming back, and thought of using the words “FBI” and “Oklahoma State” in the same sentence would have seemed outrageous. A lot can change in seven months.
The Big 12 preseason poll (as voted on by the coaches) was released on Thursday, and the turnover and turmoil enveloping Oklahoma State’s men’s basketball program showed in the voting.
| No. | Team | Points | 2016-17 Record | 2016-17 Finish |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Kansas | 81 | 31-5 (16-2) | 1 |
| 2 | West Virginia | 71 | 28-9 (12-6) | 2 |
| 3 | TCU | 64 | 24-15 (6-12) | 8 |
| 4 | Texas | 49 | 11-22 (4-14) | 10 |
| 5 | Baylor | 47 | 27-8 (12-6) | 3 |
| 6 | Oklahoma | 43 | 20-13 (5-13) | 9 |
| 7 | Texas Tech | 36 | 18-14 (6-12) | 7 |
| 8 | Kansas State | 27 | 21-14 (8-10) | 6 |
| 9 | Iowa State | 22 | 24-11 (12-6) | 4 |
| 10 | Oklahoma State | 10 | 20-13 (9-9) | 5 |
Holy TCU love, Batman!
Also, this means eight coaches voted Oklahoma State 10th and one voted them 9th.
The Cowboys do have a solid core returning including the Big 12’s leading returning scorer in Jeffrey Carroll and Davon Dillard, plus a handful of young and promising players like Jimmy Chitwood Lindy Waters, Cam McGriff, among others.
In 21 seasons in the Big 12, #OKState has never finished last. But that's where OSU is picked this preseason: https://t.co/54nRsCPfbT

And some new faces could make a difference from Day 1 starting with transfer Kendall Smith and incoming freshman Zack Dawson.
So, is there reason for concern heading forward? Sure. Are there some darker days ahead once this whole Lamont Evans fiasco makes its way off of an NCAA desk? Likely. But the Cowboys have some players and it appears they have a coach they believe in. That’s a good start.
