The Advice Mason Rudolph Gave to Baker Mayfield Following His Fayetteville Arrest

Following the arrest of Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield in Fayetteville in late-February, the Sooners quarterback dealt with a swarm of criticism for how the arrest went down and his behavior during the incident that ended with him being tackled by SEC police.

OSU quarterback Mason Rudolph, who spoke with CBS Sports recently about expectations for 2017 and how he feels “it’s our year,” gave some sage advice to Mayfield following the arrest that gave us great insight into the wisdom of QB1.

“I told him,” Rudolph told CBS Sports. “‘You go out of your kingdom, they’re going to come after you … It’s not Norman, brother.'”

Rudolph and Baker have caught some flack on social media for their recent escapades on spring break together. After all, most rivals don’t party on the beach together in Destin. But QB1 says their time together in Destin, where they apparently formed a relationship at the Whale’s Tail, is what makes the rivalry that much better.

“Me and Baker Mayfield were on that trip,” Rudolph continued. “It makes the rivalry even that much better. You’re hanging out with these guys in Destin. It makes the trash talkin’ that much better.”

If you’re not into your quarterback partying with your rivals quarterback, Rudolph made it clear they aren’t buddy-buddy despite the outside appearances—especially on the football field.

“People say it takes away from the rivalry when they see pictures from the trip,” Rudolph added. “I think it enhances the rivalry. We hate those guys that much more.”
