Chad Whitener: ‘I Make the Most of the Time That I Do Have’
Oklahoma State continues its Stories of Gratitude series with senior linebacker Chad Whitener. The former Cal Bear decided to come to Oklahoma State as a walk-on and made an immediate impact once he got an opportunity in 2015. After Ryan Simmons went down with a knee injury, Whitener took over a starting role which he’s held going on three years. The Mansfield, Texas native knows about taking advantage of his opportunities.
Unfortunately, that’s a lesson that he had to learn the hard way as he shared in this video. Whitener talks about the tragic death of his older brother and how that affected he and his family.
“I think about him all the time,” said Whitener. “Losing him taught me a lot. I learned there are no guarantees. No moment’s promised. Nothing. So I make most of the time that I do have.”
It’s an important lesson that we all could learn from. It’s easy to talk about or even empathize with but going through something like that is uniquely trying and coming out the better for it is all the more commendable.
Glenn Spencer chimed in as well on the respect he has for someone who is, no doubt, one of his favorites to coach.
