Combine Weigh-In: Ateman’s Long Reach and Rudolph Adds Some Weight

Published

on

The quarterbacks and wide receivers groups — where the bulk of OSU’s prospects reside — are going through measurements and medical exams on Thursday, as well as finishing up any testing and interviews they have remaining.

You can check out their full schedule here.

Franchises pick apart each prospect, which is their job since they are potentially about to invest a lot of money into them. Things like hand size, wingspan and even shoulder flexibility are just part of the puzzle that scouts use to grade and compare prospects.

So, let’s take a look at how four former Cowboys measured up thanks to the Twitter feed of Yahoo senior NFL reporter Charles Robinson.

Mason Rudolph

Rudolph has packed on six pounds from his weigh-in at the Senior Bowl when he was still in a walking boot. So the OSU record-setter, who said he was 100 percent healthy last week, has been putting in the work.

His hands, again, are not the biggest. They measure smaller than all of the top projected QBs ahead of him, even 6-foot tall Baker Mayfield had a quarter of an inch on him.

It’s not a deal-breaker but it’s a box you check if you’re a scout from a team like the Bills or the Giants that play a lot of games outside and in cold or wet weather.

James Washington

The Prez boasts good-sized hands and long arms for his height/frame. His wingspan is massive for someone measuring less than 6 feet tall (and wider than Rudolph’s).

Of course, Washington’s #BagYear won’t be based solely on this portion of the combine, but he checks all the boxes pretty well for what scouts are looking for here.

Marcell Ateman

Ateman’s measurables should get any NFL scout excited. While he doesn’t have huge mitts, his tape shows that he’s got the strength and dexterity in his phalanges to make the catches he needs to.

But that catch radius? Otherworldly. Just peep that wingspan to go along with his 6-4 plus height.

Chris Lacy

The only member of this group that did not weigh in at the Senior Bowl, Lacy is a somewhat of an unknown with most scouts because of the backseat he took in that uber-deep carpool of wide receiver talent.

But a good showing this weekend could boost his draft profile and possibly get him into the late-round pick discussion. The engineering major should also test and interview well.

Update: According to his agent, Lacy measure at 6 foot 3 and 205 pounds.

And according to NDT Scouting, Lacy’s arm length came in at 31 1/4 inches and his hands measured at 9 3/4 inches.
