Fowler comes up short at Quail Hollow

On Sunday, Rickie Fowler finished at a cool 5-under at the PGA Championship with a Sunday surge and a T5 standing. Despite yet another disappointing finish (yes, I wish I could call a $400,00 purse for fifth place disappointing without laughing), Fowler remains confident in his approach.

“I knew I still had a shot out here today. I knew it was going to be tough,” Fowler said. “It was a little unfortunate yesterday, two 3-putts where I have been putting great all week, all year. And then 8-iron on 17 where we didn’t think water was in play, I don’t know if the breeze picked up a bit or what. So it’s not like we made a bad swing or anything.” [Golf Channel]

Fowler’s buddy, Justin Thomas, took home the Wanamaker Trophy. Fowler was among the first fans to snap a selfie with the first-time major winner.

OSU using sleep to succeed

Mike Gundy has been at the forefront of innovation in college football. From mullets to satellite camps, he’s blazed trails that many have followed behind (although the mullet might not be as popular). The latest innovation: Sleep science.

Before Mason Rudolph goes to sleep, he slips on a pair of orange-tinted sunglasses to block out blue spectrum light.

He can look at his phone — which looks green through the orange lenses — without the negative effects of blue light, which suppresses melatonin and, in the past, likely kept Rudolph awake. [Tulsa World]

Orange-tinted sunglasses for science! How amazing is that? OSU hired Rise Science to take care of the sleep science program at OSU, and thus far the likes of Rudolph, Chad Whitener and Jalen McCleskey are some of the biggest names taking place in the innovation. Other schools like Clemson have used similar science, so it’s fascinating to see OSU seek out a unique market to seek an edge both on and off the field.
