Heisman Hopefuls
Does OSU have a chance to send not one but two players to Manhattan?
We saw that quarterback/receiver combinations can both be Heisman finalists with Mayfield and Westbrook in 2016. Could it happen with another school in Oklahoma this season?
Rudolph needs to up his touchdown numbers from the 28 he threw in 2016. And Washington needs to haul in more than 71 passes and score more than 10 touchdowns. But if he does that and keeps his yards per catch at a lofty 19.4, he’s got the best chance of any receiver of making it to New York. [Yahoo]
It’s an insane thought probably but if the Pokes take care of business, it’s not a crazy thought.
Counter Points
Is there an argument to be made that the Pokes shouldn’t have their top ten preseason ranking?
However, the Oklahoma State defense might hold this team back from a top 10 rank. From 2014 through 2016, this unit ranked 53rd, 66th and 58th in my defense rankings by yards per play adjusted for schedule. Not top 10 type material.
The defense has the most questions in the secondary where they lose their top 3 performers from last season. They will rely on Clemson transfer Adrian Baker to take a leading role at cornerback, but many young players will play important downs.
In the pass happy Big 12, the secondary is not a good place to have question marks. Oklahoma State’s defense will have to make a drastic improvement over the last 3 years to live up to a top 10 rank. [Football Study Hall]
I’d say that point could be a bit overrated – two experienced veteran safeties, a healthy pass rush with veteran defensive ends and some athletic veteran linebackers could also be pointed to. Pointed to as strengths that should help nurture developing corners.
