Underwood loves Mitch
“A big part of why I needed to change our defense was Mitch,” said Underwood, who saw his squad too often exposed when extending far out into passing lanes. “Mitch is very seldom in the wrong position. He’s our best defender. He’s an all-league defender.
“And yet he was the guy who was getting penalized the most, with fouls, because he was helping all the time.” [NewsOK]
First.
Team.
All.
Defense.
The re-emergence of Leyton Hammonds
Mark Cooper compares Hammonds to Chris Carson, and that’s a pretty good comp.
And as Oklahoma State welcomes Texas Tech to Gallagher-Iba Arena on Saturday, Hammonds is averaging 14 points and 6.5 rebounds over his past four games. He was OSU’s source of energy in a come-from-behind, 80-68 win at Kansas State Wednesday, posting his third career double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Hammonds shares one valuable trait with Carson: He’s a senior nearing the end of his career. “Senior pride’s kicked in,” OSU coach Brad Underwood said. “At some point you realize that it’s coming to an end and he’s taken a lot of pride in maximizing what the defense is giving him.” [Tulsa World]
Mike Holder is fired up about sellouts (and hoops)
Here is Robert Allen on Mike Holder’s love for this hoops team.
“Maybe champion,” Holder added in his thinking of a better word than sellout. “That might be be the only better word than sellout. It’s gratifying that people are coming back. It was starting to get a little lonely in here. It is gratifying that are fans are back and supporting this team. It is good to see that the passion is there.”
“When the team started out 0-6, you had to wonder if they were going to win a game, but the way they’ve been playing now it is hard to believe they lost the first six (conference) games,” Holder said. “When you’ve got Jawun Evans and the way some of these other players have improved their games, this is a really good team.” [Go Pokes – $]

OSU and NCAA Notes
Gary Parrish has OSU in his top 25 … Jentry Holt has thrived at Oklahoma State despite odd high school incident … Great profile of senior Katelyn Loecker here … OSU is No. 1 in KenPom offensive efficiency.
#okstate averages an opponent-adjusted 125.7 points per 100 possessions which is now No. 1 in the country according to @kenpomeroy. pic.twitter.com/5tW470x6WM

More Stuff I’m Reading
I wrote a thing on Tiger Woods and our hot-take culture … KD went in on Shaq (which ended the thin ties Carson had to him).
KD has slandered my favorite player of all-time (Shaq). His turn to the dark side is complete. pic.twitter.com/FxCpPYv9zl
