Long and Short of It

If you were out of commission yesterday and haven’t read anything else on the site, here’s a great summary of yesterday’s game.

From the cusp of the 3-point line, Oklahoma State sophomore Cam McGriff rushed toward the basket. In one motion, he rose from the Allen Fieldhouse floor, gathered Kendall Smith’s miss and dunked.

McGriff and that play embodied the Cowboys on Saturday. They were energetic, aggressive and passionate for the entirety of their 84-79 victory against seventh-ranked Kansas. [NewsOK]

Crime Dog has been trying to rally the troops all week, his play loudly matched his enthusiasm in Lawrence. OSU dominated all the hustle related things.

Unrelated thought: Is OSU a more successful version of Kansas playing OSU in football? Nearly snake-biting the Cowboy team with more to lose feels like something KU football almost does every other year.

A Good Coach is Hard to Find

After hiring Oklahoma State analyst Brian VanGorder as defensive coordinator, the Louisville faithful had some telling thoughts on finding a good defensive coordinator.

Defensive coordinator hires, in this way, can be tricky and difficult for an offensive-minded head coach. You’re simply not going to find many home runs in the bunch because those guys have gone on to plum jobs as head coaches (Kirby Smart, Will Muschamp and Jeremy Pruitt, for example) or already have good jobs with a good program, leaving them unlikely to bolt for anything other than a head-coaching job (Bud Foster or Brent Venables, for example).

Meanwhile, an unwise gamble on an unproven position coach on the rise has the potential to wreck your defense in a year’s time.

That’s why you’ll often see the same names continue to pop up for defensive coordinator jobs. Guys like John Chavis or Kevin Steele or Todd Grantham – or Brian VanGorder – may be retreads, but they tend to look good in a tight spot, simply because a head coach can be sure of what he’s going to get. This seems to be some of the most helpful perspective on how to judge a defensive coach hire in an offensively explosive but defensively…behind program.

Good work here, Cowboy.

Fun day for a couple of seniors who’ve paid their dues.
