Not Meant to Be
Could one of Iba’s favorite sons have wound up coaching Kansas instead of his Oklahoma State Cowboys? An old athletic director at Kansas says it was definitely under consideration.
“I knew Eddie (Sutton) from back in our playing days. I played for KU about the same time he played at Oklahoma State,” (former KU athletic director Monte Johnson) told me by phone from his Lawrence home. “I kept track of him over the years and had a lot of respect for him. When looking at replacing Ted Owens, I looked at anybody that might have had Kansas ties.”
Sutton was born in the tiny southwest Kansas town of Bucklin.
“As we got through the interviews in Albuquerque at the Final Four that year, I was trying to narrow it down to see where we stood with about 10 candidates,” Johnson continued, “and Eddie was one of the top people I considered from that pool. I wasn’t sure what his timetable was going to be. I knew what mine was. I had to do something as soon as I could.”
Johnson said Sutton sounded interested when the two visited in Albuquerque. [TulsaWorld]
Coach balked at the opportunity to coach a then-middling (.500 record team) Jayhawk team while he had the Arkansas Razorbacks rolling. Larry Brown seized the opportunity to leave the pros and took the job – and KU to the 1988 national championship.
Could you imagine the salt in the wounds if OSU alums had given Kansas their last two national title-winning coaches?
Signing Day Need to Know
There’s not a lot of suspense with Signing Day today but that doesn’t mean it won’t still be a good day.
…Oklahoma State will sign two players. I would say just two after head coach Mike Gundy and his staff collected 22 signatures on the first ever early signing period for football on Dec. 20, but when the two players signing are 6-2, 292 pound defensive tackle Samuela Tuihalamaka and 6-5, 284 pound Amadou Fofana then that is not just two players.
Tuihalamaka and Fofana are two major additions to the Oklahoma State football program on the defensive line and those two young men are potential difference makers from being a good team still heavily dependent on offense or a more balanced team taking advantage of the new schemes and ideas of recently hired defensive coordinator Jim Knowles. [Go Poke$]
“Major additions” feels a bit strong but continuing to layer the defensive line with talent and size reinforces the strength that has been the Cowboy defensive line under Joe Bob Clements. That’s worth smiling about.
