Rudolph, Washington Headline Five Cowboys Invited to 2018 NFL Combine
The NFL Combine. A weekend where some of college football’s best players run around in their underwear performing feats of strength and athleticism all with the goal of catching the eye of an NFL team.
In all seriousness, it’s the dream of every NFL hopeful to receive an invite to participate in the combine. This year, five Cowboys will be heading to Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis to take part: Marcell Ateman, Mason Rudolph, James Washington, Chris Lacy, and Tre Flowers.
The NFL released their full list of invitees this morning.
It’s no surprise to see Rudolph, Washington, and Ateman, on the list. All three are expected to be drafted and could go as high the first round.
While Tre Flowers had a somewhat disappointing season compared to expectations, he was still one of OSU’s most athletic and talented defenders last season.
The name that might surprise most is Chris Lacy as he was far from OSU’s most productive receiver this season. He nabbed 20 catches (5th) for 264 yards (6th) and zero touchdowns. It speaks to a couple of things, including just how good the receiving corps at OSU is. As our own Adam Lunt noted, it’s also why more top receivers should look to commit to the Cowboys.
Chris Lacy was invited to the NFL Combine. Not sure people understand the significance here. Lacy had a solid career, but he was the 6th leading receiver at OSU in 2017. If you're a WR and want to the go the NFL, and you don't come to OSU, that's on you.

Lacy essentially said this when we talked to him in the fall. He noted that if you’re a receiver and you like to catch passes, you should play in the Cowboys’ offense.
Getting a combine invite is no guarantee of being drafted. But every year some team falls in love with a player because of his “intangibles.” It also offers players the opportunity to sit down with NFL scouts and make their “pitch” on why they’d be a good fit. This is the perfect chance for players like Lacy and Flowers to show off what they can do, and maybe catch someone’s eye.
In all, 29 players from the Big 12 got invites. OU and Texas tied for the most with six each, followed by OSU with five. Only Baylor didn’t have a player invited. Among the notable Big 12 names with golden tickets; Baker Mayfield, Mark Andrews, Alan Lazard, Michael Dixon, Malik Jefferson, and Byron Pringle.
The 2018 NFL Combine runs February 27 through March 3 at Lucas Oil Satdium in Indianapolis.
Here is the schedule for the on-field workouts:
- Friday, March 2: RB, OL, K, ST
- Saturday, March 3: QB, WR, TE
- Sunday, March 4: DL, LB
- Monday, March 5: DB
