A very happy new year from PFB – may your days be as fruitful as a Spencer Sanders-Chuba Hubbard zone read. Enjoy all of the bowl games on today!

Bullets Rundown

• Bet on the Pokes (against the spread)
• Inky’s bat was legendary
• Expectations and enjoying the Pokes

OSU Bullets

• Woe – is Kasey Dunn staying?

• This is kind of wild – if you bet against the spread on the Pokes, they were the best bet in college football in the 2010s.

Against the spread, OSU took the top spot in college football, with a record of 79-51. In case you’re wondering, Connecticut was the least-profitable college football team, going 42-77-3 against the spread.

Having served as OSU’s coach for the last 15 seasons — and thus, the entire decade — Mike Gundy was rated as the best college football coach for against-the-spread betting. [NewsOK]

• It’s hard to overstate how impressive Pete Incaviglia’s bat was in Stillwater. He still owns the record for home runs in a college career (100).

It all starts with Incaviglia. The Cowboys slugger had a final season for the ages, blasting 48 home runs behind a 1.140 slugging percentage in 1985, both still NCAA single-season records. Only four players in the history of college baseball have eclipsed the 40-home run mark in a season… [NCAA]

Inky passed a Florida State long bomber from the early ’80s but nobody has come within 12 since then.

• I think Carson’s comment here rings true about the Pokes too. It’s not fun (or reasonable) to watch a team continuously and never having expectations but looking at the roster and developing expectations reasonably – and then watching the team is a different experience.

It’s a different experience than saying “Mike Gundy makes $5m – they should win every game!” and different than saying OSU loses all the time and taking every sign as confirmation of that reality.

For instance – thinking about Taylor Cornelius’ team in 2018. OSU just lost two of it’s ten best offensive players and plugged in a quarterback playing his first significant minutes. The line looked frail on the edges and a new defense was being broken in. But it felt like they would have that same ability to pull out wins like the 2015-2017 teams did for some reason. It was easy to spend time frustrated by the lows and not enjoy the highs.

• Mason Rudolph’s injury earlier this season could have been life-threatening (not the one where he was hit with a swinging helmet)

Pokes added a grad transfer offensive lineman yesterday – should help plug the holes left by Marcus Keyes and Johnny Wilson

• Really cool that Cowboy football alum David Glidden is climbing the ranks – named a tight ends coach at the University of Memphis

•’ I have a hard time thinking the correct answer would be anything other than Phil Forte or Keiton Page.

• I’m not sure Tony A. makes the Hall of Fame but he’s made an all-time impact on one of 30 franchises. He’d have an argument if the NBA valued defense as much as they do offense.

Why World War I films feel dramatically different than WW II counterparts (can’t wait to see 1917 next month)
– Also, here’s a solid list of WWI movies to watch
Influencing people vs. being a social media influencer
• Really good faith-based thoughts on spending time with God
• I loved this line about art in a movie review:

Indeed, the novel seems at times to be warring between these two contrasting worldviews. This is a strength, not a flaw. Inferior art advocates; good art wrestles. [TGC]

If I had a writing goal this year it’d be that – to wrestle with the different perspectives as well as advocating for takes.
