Pick Your Poison
Tyron Johnson is getting some buzz for Big 12 newcomer of the year… for good reason.
(T)he biggest advantage Tyron Johnson has over his competitors is being at Oklahoma State. Yes, the Cowboy’s have an embarrassment of riches at wide out, but that will actual help him. Many expect Johnson to line up wide opposite James Washington, but I’m not certain that will be the case.
I expect to see him in the slot next to the All-Big 12 receiver. Playing them side by side would really open up things for Johnson who could feast on defenders left one on one while the help goes to Washington. Send Washington deep and Mason Rudolph can hit a Johnson underneath as the safety back pedals to cover over the top. [Heartland College Sports]
I love the idea of Tyron/Washington on the same side of the field – an insane assignment for a couple of defensive backs.
Best of the Rest
As the NBA free agency winds down, former Cowboy Tony Allen is still out there to be picked up.
Allen is a proven elite defender who can get his hands in passing lanes (3.3 deflections per game last season for the Memphis Grizzlies, sixth-highest among all NBA guards) with 6.1 contested shots per game.
His offense can be spotty at times, but he averaged 9.1 points per game last year for the Grizzlies and can create offense in the pick and roll, scoring 0.94 of a point per possession in 2016-17, good enough to be in the top half of the league. [The Washington Post]
13 years in and there’s still meat on the bone with the Grindfather. A staunch perimeter defender with some offensive utility will find a place in today’s NBA – especially at a discounted price.
