Hard to Bet On Against

CBS’ Tom Fornelli gave his take on the 2018 Cowboy Football win total and which way to bet on the Pokes.

OKLAHOMA ST.
8 wins: Oklahoma State has been the second-best program in the Big 12 for a while now, but I’m expecting a step back this year, as are bookmakers. The total is set at eight for a team that has won at least 10 games in each of the last three years, and six times in the previous eight.

I do think that streak ends in 2018, and not just because Mason Rudolph and James Washington are gone. Mike Gundy has shown time and time again he can produce QBs and WRs. My concern is an offensive line that is one of the least experienced in the conference and a defense that lost a lot of critical parts. Still, even with all those questions, I can’t foresee a 7-5 season for the Cowboys, so I can’t justify the under. [CBS Sports]

I could reread that first line over and over: Oklahoma State has been the second-best program in the Big 12 for a while now. And that wasn’t an OSU homer talking.

Fornelli bails and takes the push and I think he embodies the general perception: the lost production is a material number but the track record of performance is too significant to ignore. It’s hard to ignore that itchy feeling that this team will do better than seven wins.

Where Are We?

In the first few lines of an Athletic piece ($$$) a reflection on Gundy’s becoming aware of reality in Stillwater ties into the above thoughts well.

A few years ago, Mike Gundy found himself taking what he swears was his first nostalgic look back at the transformation he’s overseen at his alma mater.

“For the first six or eight years, I wasn’t smart enough to realize how hard it was,” Gundy told The Athletic. “That helped me. Now, I look back at where we were and it scares me. I probably wouldn’t have done it, because I would’ve thought, ‘There’s no way you can do this at Oklahoma State.’ ” [The Athletic]

I’m not sure about those thoughts. I think those first six to eight years were the groundwork for what’s laid today.

Oklahoma State rolled the dice on a flowering young offensive coordinator and his CEO-qualities, marketing genius, and ability to innovate/adapt played perfectly to get to the reality of today.

KEM was not the linebacker I expected to be on this list – but glad to have both of them back.

A clever ask by a former Poke – congrats on the engagement.
