Slow and Steady
You can count me in the camp that was surprised when Mike Holder signed a three-year deal.
The news came as a mild surprise to some, who thought the hire of alumnus Chad Weiberg as deputy athletic director last year meant a transition of power could be in the near future.
But Holder, who turns 70 in August, said retirement hasn’t been much of a discussion. His office in Gallagher-Iba Arena is as much a home for him as anywhere.
When he’s in Stillwater, he’s usually there.
“At my age you have to think about it,” Holder said. “You realize you’re closer to the end than the beginning, absolutely. But there’s not much else that I do. I like to work.”
Of Weiberg, Holder said: “He’s a real asset and we’re lucky to have him. Someday he’ll make a great athletic director.” [TulsaWorld]
With the football coaching legend locked down, and assuming Weiberg doesn’t get antsy, there’s nothing but time concerning the athletic director spot. Continuity and stability are great things and letting the deputy director watch it done can’t hurt a thing.
Crowning Achievement
In the same piece mentioned above – the work Mike Holder has in front of him is outlined.
With baseball stadium construction underway and a soccer stadium nearing completion, Holder has his eyes turned to what’s next for his next three years.
He would like to raise money for a wrestling facility in the field east of Gallagher-Iba Arena. He estimates it would take $30 million to $40 million. He also wants to construct both an indoor and outdoor facility for the track and field program, two projects that would be in the neighborhood of $50 million combined.
“I don’t know if it would be very practical to think that you can do that in three years, but I’ve never been a real practical person,” he said. “Just takes 1, 2, 3 people to step up, write a big check and then all things become possible.” [TulsaWorld]
What an incredible legacy that would be. Most would kick their feet up and enjoy the fruit of their labors in a suite at BPS. But Holder is out shaking the bushes fighting for non-revenue sports – very impressive.
