Running the Gauntlet

ESPN recognized the three-game stretch this fall from mid-November until Thanksgiving as one of the top three most difficult in the country.

2. Oklahoma State
Nov. 10 at Oklahoma, Nov. 17 vs. West Virginia, Nov. 24 at TCU
The Cowboys were the exception last season. They were the only team on this list to avoid a sub-.500 stretch and carved out a 10-3 season. Once again, they face a grueling November and will be doing so without the prolific pass-catch combo of Mason Rudolph and James Washington. It’s still weird to see Bedlam not coming at the end of the season, but this tough stretch starts with a trip to No. 5 Oklahoma.

Then comes a home game against No. 11 West Virginia and one of the top returning passers in the country, Will Grier. The three-game gauntlet is capped by a trip to No. 20 TCU, which just seems to reload every year under Gary Patterson and won in Stillwater last season when the Cowboys were ranked No. 6 nationally. Taking two of three from that stretch of games (or one of three if the first one is a W) would be a fantastic surprise for a reloading year.

There’s Always Next Year

As Cowboy Baseball wrapped up over the weekend, let’s take a quick peek ahead at what next year has to offer.

Looking Ahead: Oklahoma State is losing five players to graduation, most notably Jon Littell and Andrew Rosa. Colin Simpson (.280 avg., 18 HR) is draft eligible and will likely be drafted high enough to lure him into the MLB. Matt Kroon (.300 avg., 11 HR) is also draft eligible and might sign. Carson Teel did not have a stellar ERA this year and was inconsistent at times. He should stay. Christian Funk will also likely return for one more year…

Overall, this is a team that will be able to compete. I think they definitely make a regional. Josh Holliday’s teams are by far the most unpredictable in this conference. You never know what they are going to do , and always seem to have this one hot streak that comes out of nowhere. [HCS]

We can talk about the amazing meat of the sandwich that was conference play and swing the other way for the skid into post-season play – the comment about the Pokes being hard to project are spot on. But what Holliday has done in his short time is inject life into a semi-moribund program and show off it’s potential.

OSU and NCAA Notes

Leslie O’Neal is up for the CFB Hall of Fame this year….Interesting to see how The Athletic is bringing in all the talent….Most outrageous football ending for each Big 12 football team over recent years….See which Big 12 schools play the most morning/afternoon/night games

Like the idea of striping for the premier non-con opponent every year.

An anchor he will be.

Stillwater has been good to Pittsburgh.

Someone tell me Cody Thomas has to play now.
