Collective Gains

When the Cleveland Browns went for a lockdown cornerback with one of their top five picks, it spelled out big gains for Cowboy alum Emmanuel Ogbah.

Basically, we aren’t covering long enough to let him get to the quarterback. Myles (Garrett) and others—especially [defensive end] Emmanuel Ogbah—will get more chances because of Denzel (Ward).” Ogbah, (defensive coordinator Gregg) Williams said, was a major reason why the Browns went Ward over Chubb. “Ogbah’s a rising star in this league,” Williams said. “He’s got a chance to be Chubb.” High praise. [Sports Illustrated]

The piece mentioned how forcing the quarterback to watch a route develop will only help Ogbah and former first-overall pick Myles Garrett with their pass rush. Comparing Ogbah to a top-ten pick is high praise and expectations put on the former second-round pick.

Black-and-Orange to Black-and-Gold

A couple of factors stuck out about Pittsburgh drafting OSU’s record-breaking senior quarterback to be their quarterback of the future.

By trading up for Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph at No. 76 overall, Pittsburgh is actively protecting itself whenever Roethlisberger, 36, decides to retire. Pittsburgh targeted Rudolph early in the draft process and spent a lot of time with him at his pro day. His drop to the early third round made this a more palatable move for a team that could have Roethlisberger for at least another three years. [ESPN]

First 0f all – a delayed timeline. Barring injuries to an aging Big Ben, Rudolph will be able to have a redshirt year or three.

The Steelers throw the deep ball more than most NFL teams, and Rudolph’s specialty is going vertical. He produced a gaudy 13,618 passing yards in three-plus years as a starter, good enough for 9.41 yards per passing attempt. [ESPN]

This isn’t a Steelers’ blog but the idea that one of Rudolph’s best qualities will be supremely valued makes him specifically qualified for the job opening. Learning from not only Big Ben but premier wideout Antonio Brown will only speed up Rudolph’s adjustment to the game.
