Crowd Pleasers

While a pair of Cowboy freshman (Matthew Wolff and Austin Eckroat) are playing well for the Pokes through day two of the NCAA tournament, they’ve been buoyed by the home-course advantage.

The growing crowds — heavy in Cowboy orange — have actually helped some of the players settle in, rather than adding to the nerves.

“The atmosphere was incredible,” Wolff said. “The fans we have are the best in the country and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. It’s awesome. Hosting this event, feeling the most comfortable here — as soon as I made my first putt, I heard a roar and that really got me going.”

The Cowboys will be in the first group off the No. 1 tee Sunday morning, just looking to keep themselves as high as possible on the leaderboard with the goal of making the top eight after Monday’s round to advance to the match play bracket. [NewsOK]

While lots of players will warmly claim the “best fans” title, it’s an optimal situation to have your young guns playing for the trophy on your home course with your home fans cheering them along.

A Casual Glance

While this Yahoo Sports piece makes a critical omission (and inclusion), the Pokes are ranked well in the big picture of 2018 Big 12 quarterback situations.

5. Oklahoma State – Dru Brown, Taylor Cornelius, Keondre Wudtee
Cornelius was Mason Rudolph’s backup a year ago. Wudtee played in two games as a freshman in 2017. Brown is a graduate transfer from Hawaii. Coach Mike Gundy certainly has some options. Let’s start with Brown, who has the deepest resume of the three. Brown was Hawaii’s starter in 2017 and was 254-412 passing for 2,785 yards, 18 touchdowns and eight interceptions. It’s reasonable to think he didn’t transfer to OSU without the belief he was going to start. Cornelius is entering his last season of eligibility as well and has thrown just 24 career passes. If we can forgive the wrong underclassmen being on the list (Wudtee over Spencer Sanders), ranking the Pokes behind only Texas in the category of “not a clear-cut starter” on campus is very appropriate.
