All The Comparisons

If 2017 was supposed to be the best shot at a 2011 season, then how much 2018 is like 2012 (or 2014) will communicate much about Oklahoma State as a football program.

The last time Oklahoma State needed to replace an all-time great quarterback and receiver, it was Brandon Weeden and Justin Blackmon.

The next three seasons ebbed and flowed. It took until November 2014 for OSU to discover a signal-caller who could consistently keep the Cowboys in Big 12 title contention. Oklahoma State was the Big 12 favorite in 2013, but sandwiched 8-5 and 7-6 seasons around it.

Now, OSU is trying to maintain its hold on a place in the top tier of the Big 12 once again. [TulsaWorld]

Hot take: priority one shouldn’t be about 2018 wins but about finding a quarterback for the future. A more warm, reasonable take: if Spencer Sanders shows he’s close enough to Taylor Cornelius and Dru Brown, start the freshman and get him groomed for the odd year schedule on deck when TCU and OU come to town.

Long Ball 4 Life

It’s been a blast watching Mason Rudolph find James Washington, Marcel Ateman, and Co. connect for long plays… Are we sure those days of chunk plays through the air are over?

Just because the Cowboys don’t have Mason Rudolph and James Washington doesn’t mean they won’t go deep next fall. Taylor Cornelius threw long to Tyron Johnson a few times during the spring game.

Johnson might not put up Washington’s numbers, but I promise he’ll catch a ton more than the 18 passes he snagged last season. It should be a blast watching him work beyond intermediate route runners Jalen McCleskey and Dillon Stoner. [TulsaWorld]

It’d help to know who’s going to be throwing the ball before making an educated guess. But if Cornelius is taking snaps, it’s safe to assume some semblance of the deep ball will remain in the playbook.

OSU and NCAA Notes

Solid update on Leyton Hammonds and his experience playing overseas….Where do blue chip recruits and NFL guys come from?….Spring Game has everyone feeling good about recevier Landon Wolf….2018-2019 CFB Playoff and bowl schedule was released (see Big 12 bowls here)….Is West Virginia’s Will Grier the next Mason Rudolph?

Great news here, thankful to hear the voice of the Cowboys is doing well.

Smart is a hoss. How does the shortest guy in the paint pull down a board over three guys? INCLUDING JOEL EMBIID.

Love this graphic.
