Bill Haisten had some interesting thoughts on the Weiberg hiring yesterday.

It’s interesting that Mike Holder was quoted in Oklahoma State’s Thursday press release that reported the hiring of Texas Tech administrator Chad Weiberg as OSU’s new deputy director of athletics.

Several sources say that Weiberg has been identified as the successor to the 69-year-old Holder as OSU’s athletic director.

Does Weiberg become the athletic director in three years or one year or three months? It seems unlikely that he would return to Stillwater without a written agreement on the transition date.

As Holder’s most recent contract expired in June 2016, he is working on a year-to-year basis. His 2016-17 salary amounts $644,372. [TulsaWorld]

So the facts (per sources) are Weiberg is the heir apparent but the timeline is vague and Holder is on a year-to-year basis. Previous discussions with Haisten have unveiled that Mike Holder is the most politically connected employee of Oklahoma State University and that the Underwood departure did not sit well with heads of Oklahoma State. Interesting.

Readily apparent is that Weiberg checks a whole lot of boxes: a two-time alum, incredible pedigree, and experience at K-State and Texas Tech. A sincere, deep connection to the University and on some level (implied by Holder’s comments in the press release and previous sightings), the blessing of current AD and passionate advocate for Oklahoma State Mike Holder.

It appears all the ducks are in a row and it’s just a question of timing.

Sister Schools

A former-Sooner assistant played a key role in the Cowboys landing a grad transfer this spring.

(Adrian) Baker too was an ESPN 300 recruit from Hollywood, Florida, with offers from many of the bluebloods. This time, Baker began hearing from schools he never even spoken with out of high school, including several on the West Coast.

“It was very similar to high school,” he said. “They called, texted. People hit me up on Instagram.”

It was a conversation with (Brent) Venables, however, that helped Baker narrow his list.

“He told me which schools were good, which would be a good fit,” Baker said. “He said [Oklahoma State] was similar to Clemson, that they treat players the right way, that they believe in the right things, do stuff the right way.

“He also said that they’d win a lot of ball games.” [ESPN]

Former Sooner defensive coordinator Brent Venables was ushered out the door in 2012 when the prodigal Mike Stoops returned home but caught the elevator going up as a coordinator at Clemson.

Was it a shot at his old employer to help their rival land a solid player at a position of need? Maybe, maybe not. Probably just an assist for a former player as Baker’s other rumored options were Texas Tech, Houston, and UCF.
