History Repeats Itself

SI had a fitting rebuke for Big Ben’s snide remarks about newly drafted Mason Rudolph.

Hey Big Ben, I have a quick question for you. I know you’re busy with a lot of radio these days, so I won’t take much of your time. I wonder, do you remember Tommy Maddox? You must not, or else you probably wouldn’t have questioned the Steelers’ decision to draft your potential successor after consecutive offseasons in which you hinted at impending retirement. And you certainly wouldn’t have pledged to withhold what would be some supremely valuable mentorship to Mason Rudolph, the 22-year-old quarterback your team drafted in the third round this year. [SportsIllustrated]

The piece does a great job of outlining how harsh the sport can be, cutting short timelines. Maybe that’s why Roethlisberger is upset – he knows it may be beyond his control.

Next?

The daytime television drama that is an aging Big Ben continues and considering where Mason Rudolph fits behind him on the depth chart gives a good baseline understanding of the situation.

Rudolph is going to be Roethlisberger’s backup. He is a better-equipped pro prospect than Jones. I am not as familiar with (quarterback Josh) Dobbs, but the Steelers told us all we need to know by drafting Rudolph just one year after selecting Dobbs.

Rudolph could be Roethlisberger’s heir, whether Big Ben is comfortable with that or not. The Steelers had a first-round grade on him. They have drafted three quarterbacks in the first round since 1970 — Roethlisberger, Terry Bradshaw and Mark Malone. [TulsaWorld]

Luchador Landry is one of the more likable Sooner quarterbacks but he’s not a threat to the Steel(ers) throne. It’s a great point that Dobbs is less viable based on the timeliness of drafting a day two-guy the next year… that does leave No. 2 to be No. 2.

OSU and NCAA Notes

See a great analyst processing Big 12 teams against their over/unders for 2018 football….See where USAToday has the Pokes in their post-spring ball rankings….Cowgirl Golf is adding four different gals from four different countries for next year’s squad….Dez Bryant is the top remaining offensive free agent in professional football

Pokes ahead of Georgia but behind Baylor… interesting.

Load up on your bad dad/mom, aunt/uncle, grandparent jokes here.

Sad to hear about one of the good guys not making it far into camp – we all know Lundblade’s going to do great wherever he lands though.

Woof. Iowa State assistant accidentally slams recruit publically on Twitter.

Cowgirls in Pool B, playing on Friday. Kinda dig this pool play, wish Big 12 men’s basketball in KC was this way.
