Daily Bullets (Nov. 13): Boynton’s (Likely) Just Getting Started, Rating Mason Rudolph’s Season
Pokes are climbing the CFP rankings – up to No. 22 this week (from No. 23).
Bullets Rundown
• Boynton’s recruiting: just kicking off
• Chuba Heisman chatter
• Rating Rudolph’s season
OSU Bullets
• Marshall pointed out something terrific about Mike Boynton: how he opportunistically and patiently recruits – sort of using every part of the signing period.
In the coming weeks and months, players will commit to schools, filling their allotted scholarships and other players with hopes of going to that school will have to reevaluate. College coaches will get fired, giving commits and signees the option to look elsewhere. And players will enter the transfer portal whether it be the grad transfer route of otherwise.
Isaac Likekele was once a Fresno State pledge before his would-be coach left the school, giving him the chance to go to OSU. Chris Harris was signed with Texas A&M, but when Billy Kennedy was fired, Harris decided to go to Stillwater.
An interesting point brought up on CBS’ coverage of (Bryce) Thompson’s commitment is that Thompson chose Kansas despite the possibilities of NCAA sanctions affecting the program. That could be another possibility for movement in the coming months. [PFB]
Just looking at how the 2019 class came in with Avery Anderson, the Boones, and Marcus Watson coming in early, followed by Chris Harris, Jonathan Laurent, and eventually Hidde Roessink. It’s hard to imagine three spots (what’s left currently) being filled even after the normal signing period in the spring.
Also – I liked how Boynton signed off on Bryce Thompson’s recruitment and didn’t close any doors.
• An ESPN writer has Chuba Hubbard in the argument for the Heisman with some playful reasoning.
4. Chuba Hubbard, Oklahoma State
He leads the nation in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns and has a way cooler name than “Joe” or “Justin,” so that’s a solid case for an invite to the ceremony. [ESPN]
For Pete’s sake, the guy’s still got a 150+ yard lead after not doing anything for a week. This ESPN ranking had him at No. 6 but at least he was ahead of the Wisconsin back.
FBS RB rushing yard leaders; Week 11:
Hubbard – 1,604
Dillon – 1,451
Taylor – 1,259
Etienne – 1,214
Bellamy – 1,212
Dobbins – 1,200
Barnett – 1,118
Gainwell – 1,067
Jones – 1,063
Koback – 1,052
Akers – 1,042
Hill – 1,027
Johnson, 1,017
Hubbard AFTER CONTACT – 1,014
Boyd – 1,005— Cam Mellor (@PFF_Cam) November 11, 2019
• In a piece ranking the play of first and second-year NFL quarterbacks, Mason Rudolph was given a fair grade with some apt commentary.
When he wasn’t tremendous, Rudolph played soundly throughout and put a handful of impressive intermediate throws on film.
Grade: B+ [CBS Sports]
A grade of C+ was given on the season – that seems about right.
• It seems like this will be the general sentiment for Les Miles’ return this weekend:
I’m glad @CoachLesMiles will be back in Stillwater this weekend. He is tied to some great moments in @CowboyFB history – think Bedlam wins – and this bowl game was terrific fun. So – thanks, Les Miles #okstate #GoPokes pic.twitter.com/oXM6eyxP3r
