Daily Bullets (Nov. 19): Fun Numbers About OSU Football

Published

on

It’s hard to stay calm knowing there’s a 7 p.m. primetime showdown against the Sooners on the schedule.

Bullets Rundown

• Fun numbers about OSU Football
• A reasonable Rudolph thought
• An impressive Kansas stat

OSU Bullets

• I dove into the game notes for the OSU vs. West Virginia game and found a couple of encouraging numbers: one about Chuba and one about OSU’s sustained success.

(Chuba) Hubbard’s rushing yards through 10 games are better than three of the past four running backs to win the Heisman Trophy and eight of the 12 running backs to win the Heisman Trophy since 1980.

(An Oklahoma State Win Would… (m)ark the 10th time in the past 12 seasons it has won at least eight games. [OKState.com]

Another number that stuck out is that OSU is on a four-game streak against the Mountaineers.

So that means OSU has owned WVU over the last half-decade, Chuba is clearly on pace to at least get to NY, and my argument that Gundy is paid $5m annually not to win 10 games but to not drop below eight has a massive supporting point.

• The TulsaWorld’s Guerin Emig zoomed in on the perilous start to Mason Rudolph’s inaugural season as a starter in Pittsburgh.

If Rudolph chooses to hang in there, I hope he grows into the pro game, becomes Ben Roethlisberger’s permanent successor and eventually returns the Steelers to the Super Bowl.
It’s just I’d rather him live a healthy, less dangerous life. I’d rather not see any more images as ghastly as those from the Browns and Ravens games, whatever that takes. [TulsaWorld]

Both were particularly unnerving incidents that would cause even the most dauntless competitor to take a second look at the choice of profession. He’s had a mixture of success and failure as a starter but it seems like now would be a good time to evaluate.

• Something overlooked when you’re playing the “Kansas” of the world is just how impressive a dominant win was – particularly in stopping a perfectly capable offense.

Kansas isn’t great, nobody makes that claim, but the Jayhawks have been scary since changing offensive coordinators mid-season. They beat Texas Tech, 37-34, and took Texas to the wire, in Austin, before finally falling 50-48.

KU’s Pooka Williams ranks only behind the nation’s leading rusher, Cowboys star Chuba Hubbard, among running backs in the Big 12. And the Jayhawks have other playmakers, too. [GoPokes]

• A couple of leaguewide articles that were good: Berry Tramel’s Big 12 rankings (Pokes go bronze) and Ian Boyd’s recap of week 12

PFF has Chuba third in their Heisman rankings

• This may be the most impressive interception we’ll see all year.
