Daily Bullets (Nov. 19): Howell Victorious, Corndog Stats, Weathers Might be Great
Good morning. This week one Gundy will play for a title and the other will play to avoid the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl three days before Christmas. Should be a pretty fascinating week.
Quote of the Day: “To be honest I didn’t want to hear about it from my son. My kids are now to the age where they’re into it … they get what’s going on. They get that I’ve failed a lot of times. Fortunately it was different today.” -Charles Howell III after winning the RSM Classic
Stat of the Day: Charles Howell has earned roughly $6 million more in his career playing golf than Rob Griffin 3 has earned in his playing football.
• Berry Tramel agrees with my thoughts on OSU’s possible bowl destination. One thing I didn’t consider, though: Two Big 12 teams getting into NY6 bowls, which would bump the next two to the Alamo and Camping World, and if OSU beats TCU, could place it in the Texas Bowl. This is the same concept as a B12 team going to the CFP, but it also seems far more likely (I guess).
If the Cowboys beat TCU on Saturday, their status soars as the only seven-win team among the Big 12’s vast middle. Seems unlikely they could rise to the Alamo or Russell Athletic, but the Texas Bowl in Houston is a distinct possibility. A Houston rep was at the OSU-West Virginia game Saturday and publicly campaigned for the Cowboys. The Liberty Bowl would seem to be intrigued, too. [NewsOK]
• I’m just jealous of the headline!

• Good golly, is OU going to be shut out of the Big 12 title game?! If WVU beats them on Friday, that’s probably the scenario as Texas gets a Les Miles-less Kansas in Lawrence.
Oklahoma, West Virginia and Texas tie at 7-2 — WVU and UT would earn the championship game berths as both would have wins over OU. WVU would have the No. 1 seed (home team) via a win over Texas. [Big 12]
I legit have no idea what this would do to the bowl scenarios, but I suspect that no matter what OU-Texas-West Virginia are somehow going to occupy either the Sugar, Alamo and Camping World or Sugar, NY6 TBD and Alamo World. Regardless, I’m fairly certain OSU can’t rise any higher than the Texas Bowl.
• I nearly cried over this Dana presser. He was in sheer agony! Has anyone in history short of maybe Custer at the Battle of Little Big Horn ever wanted to be somewhere less than Dana wanted to be at this podium?!
Holgorsen was asked about his decisions to go for it on fourth down in the fourth quarter and responded with a, “Everyone in the stadium saw that” when he was teed up about West Virginia not being able to stop OSU’s offense late in the game. [PFB]
• I loved this from Kyle Boone on A.J. Green. Dudes only in my world, and A.J. is one of them (even if he doesn’t always play like it).
OSU’s offensive adjustments undeniably played as big, or maybe bigger, factor in the second biggest comeback in program history. But make no mistake that AJ Green, the man who was lumped often against West Virginia, got the final word. Then ran wild. Turns out life on the island isn’t so bad after all. [PFB]
• Guerin Emig sums up the Corndog Experience well.
We thought we knew. They were in his head. He couldn’t quite overcome. But hey, he’d always have his moment on the field among students, fans and family members after Texas.
Well, there he was Saturday evening, surrounded by jubilation again, the object of affection and appreciation. The subject of changing history. [Tulsa World]
I’m having some complicated feelings about No. 14. He’s turned out to be pretty awesome the second half of the year, but that doesn’t 1. Mean he wasn’t below average for the first half and 2. Mean he should have played all year to begin with.
Regardless, it’s hard (impossible?) to not at the very least be incredibly happy for somebody who got his shot and delivered the goods against big time teams when his job was starting to teeter a little bit. I loved that Mike Gundy recognized that here. I also loved this stat from Mark Cooper.
Cornelius has 16 touchdown passes (and only three interceptions) in five games against teams ranked in Sunday’s AP Top 25 poll: Boise State, Iowa State, Texas, Oklahoma and West Virginia.
That’s six more than the next-best performer against ranked teams, Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray. No other quarterback has more than eight. [Tulsa World]
• There’s also hoops! Marshall Scott is directing the Michael Weathers train, and No. 23 has him dreaming of a, well, better-than-10th-place finish in the B12 this year.
Seeing how big an impact Michael Weathers made with his first meaningful minutes, made me wonder just how good this team can be when Mike Cunningham and Curtis Jones are able to play. [PFB]
I’m just dreaming about this swat.
• I really loved Charles Howell winning Sea Island on Sunday. I loved this story from Sean Martin perfectly wrapping it all up, too.
The Cowboys’ coach, Mike Holder, gave the team 100 practice balls for the year. Players had to run for every lost ball.
“The only thing that would interrupt Charles is that we had to shag our own balls,” Loar said. “He was just getting warmed up and he had to go shag. Most guys would just hit wedges because they didn’t want to walk that far or were afraid to lose them.” [PGA Tour]

“Every world-class investor is questioning right now how they can improve,” he said. “So, in a machine-driven age where everything is driven by speed, perhaps the edge is judgment, time and perspective.” [Failing NYT]
