Daily Bullets (Oct. 22): Mike Holder, Mike Boynton Get Their Guys

One a millionaire donor, the other a top-100 recruit.

Good morning, basketball crootin is on the upswing, the Spencer Sanders era is in sight and this OSU isn’t the most recent OSU to get embarrassed on national television. Let’s go.

New Marcus

Oklahoma State (and Mike Boynton) got its guy on Sunday night when top-100 guard Marcus Watson committed for 2019. Boynton has been absolutely crushing on the recruiting trail.

Watson’s strength is in the transition game where he is as explosive as any wing in his class athletically. He combines that with a strong build to finish through contact at the basket. His perimeter skills are coming along as he’s becoming much more consistent with his jump shot and he’s learned to take what the defense is giving him as opposed to forcing the drive.

Defensively, he can match up with a few different positions and rebounds well for a perimeter player. He brings a lot of upside to Mike Boynton’s program. [Rivals]

Marshall Scott’s photoshop work sums it up well.

Also Boynton’s reaction was pretty great.

On OSU’s New Stadium

Great story here by Nathan Ruiz on how Oklahoma State got the money it needed and how they got it from a man most of us had never heard of.

“For Cecil to care about us and give us this opportunity to create a once-in-a-lifetime environment for our players, it’s an amazing opportunity,” Holliday said. “You have dreams, but for them to become a reality is a whole other experience, and that’s what it feels like, to see a dream come true.”

Holliday sees great symbolism in the future ballpark’s name, O’Brate Stadium’s initials pairing with the interlocking O and S the Cowboys wear on their caps. [NewsOK]

If you want to see Mike Holder’s value, there it is. You can complain about him every which way, but there would be a lot fewer stadiums and facilities without Mike Holder in the driver’s seat. More evidence here.

Boynton Might be the GOAT Quote

Every time I think it can’t get better, it gets better.

“At the end of the year, I had conversations with every player on our team. I wanted to know whether they wanted to be here,” Boynton said. “I explained to them what being here meant, and how that looks for them and how it looks for our program as it relates to what the expectations are.

“We only have three of them on scholarship that made the decision that this is what they want to do moving forward. I have no problem with anybody who’s not here. But between those guys and the guys we recruited, they have received the message of what it’s about and what the expectations are.”

Here is a coach who clearly believes in what he’s doing. That should be of great assistance as he is challenged by raised expectations for his program, an overhauled roster within it and legal proceedings outside it. [Tulsa World]

OSU and NCAA News

OSU and Vanderbilt scrimmaged in baseball over the weekend … Remember in 2005 when Texas scored 38 unanswered in Stillwater? I member … Robert Allen’s four-part interview with the Boones … On Barry’s short but absurd career … OSU’s big home wins over highly-ranked teams … Cowgirl soccer has lost four straight … OSU and Wichita State scrimmaged in hoops on Sunday, and there are photos to prove it.

No Barry statue on Homecoming, but some good notes in here on why honoring former Pokes is important to the Mikes.
