Daily Bullets (Sept 19) – Cornelius’ Sweet Spot, Gundy’s Biggest Job, and Lots of Daxcision Content

Heating Up from Downtown

Gundy used an interesting phrase to describe Taylor Cornelius’ success in the offense.

The 41-yard, two-touchdown involvement of Cornelius in the run game could be labeled the Bill Snyder Special. Gundy’s utilization of Cornelius resembled what Snyder did with Klein, Kansas State’s big, physical quarterback in 2010-12.

“I think (Cornelius) is comfortable running the ball,” Gundy said. “He gets into the flow of the game, right? Like a 3-point shooter in basketball. He hits a couple of 3s and gets hot. He’s played three games now. He’s getting a little better each game.” [TulsaWorld]

Taylor Cornelius is a county fair-worth of corndogs away from packing the punch that Klein did but the way he started ripping off a few runs here and there was impressive and three-point specialist-esque.

Gundy’s Unit

Mike Gundy highlighted what may be his biggest week-to-week job as a college football coach.

“I’d like to double down and do it again,” Gundy said of the Boise State performance. “But you know how it is in college football. If they take care of themselves tonight and come back tomorrow ready to go to work and get back into the flow of it, they’ll be fine. If they jack around tonight and lose focus and come back tomorrow thinking they’re pretty good, well that’s when they’ll get stuck. So they’ve got to figure it out and come back and go to work and that’s my job. That’s the one thing I do. Don’t do a lot else other than that. So hopefully I can keep it under control.” [TulsaWorld]

And an intense job that is – could you imagine motivating 80 18-to-22-year-olds each week? I’ve always held that’s Saban’s biggest trick: motivating players to do something they’ve already accomplished.

Take the Good with the Bad

While Taylor Cornelius hardly looked like Zac Robinson-incarnate out there Saturday, he got the chains moving when not much else did.

“I think any time you’re able to get first downs and move the football, it’s gonna get most guys in the flow of things,” Cowboy offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich said. “Whether you run it or throw it, you’re creating momentum for the whole offense, not just one person.”

But the person who makes any offense go is the quarterback, and Cornelius was so much better with the run-pass mix.

Now, there’s a risk any time your quarterback runs. It increases the hits he takes, and that increases the chance of injury. And there were times Saturday that Cornelius looked a little gimpy, a bit hobbily. But it didn’t stop him. [NewsOK]

When you can’t beat a team with your arm alone, you’ve gotta add the multi-dimensional element with your legs. Cornelius did just that and his effectiveness maximized what the OSU offense could do last Saturday.

OSU and NCAA Notes

Great primer on this week’s game against Tech from Bill Haisten….Transfers making an impact in CFB….Jarrick Bernard emerging has been a pleasant surprise….Gundy expects Zach Sinor back punting against Texas Tech….Great context here on current (and former) Cowboys special teams

Lots of the right orange on this list.

Justice is coming for Optimus Klein’s rushing record

TCU kept it interesting long enough to draw one heck of a crowd.

Daniels is a character.
