Start at the Top
Looking at tonight’s battle of inexperienced quarterbacks – Tech’s freshman throwing for more than the Big Ten West will throw for all season in last week’s game alone and Taylor Cornelius, OSU’s father time playing with poise – who has the edge?
“I made sure that he was OK with me joking about him,” Gundy said. “He’s a good boy and he’s mature in a lot of ways, and that helps our team.”
Corndog is nothing if not mature. Maturity is what keeps him from popping back at his coach. Maturity is what kept Cornelius at OSU all those years he wasn’t playing and maturity is what earned him the quarterback job this summer, without so much as August competition.
And maturity is the biggest difference between the starting quarterbacks Saturday at Boone Pickens Stadium. [NewsOK]
We could debate all day over what’s the best long-term move with playing the younger or older guy. But when the lights turn on tonight, one team will suit up with a guy who’s going on five years on campus while the other will have met there’s less than five months ago.
Ups and Downs
Tonight’s game against Texas Tech will conclude one of the wilder weeks in Cowboy sports.
What a wild whirlwind of a week it’s been already, toying with our emotions, good and bad.
Prized recruits, coming and (aargh) going, with the futures of programs literally at stake. There have been some moments of whoa! Mike Boynton pulled another 4-star commitment for the 2019 class, getting combo guard Avery Anderson to along with the Boone twins out of Tulsa. And Boynton may not be done yet. The Cowboys flipped a football commitment, adding former Colorado pledge Kamryn Farrar, a Dallas linebacker who got my attention with this quote, confirmed in his highlight tape: “When I get to the ball I get there with cruel intentions.”
Whoa, indeed. [GoPokes]
While I’m as bummed as anybody about losing out on Dax Hill (felt like somebody kicked my dog Tuesday night) but consuming the game tonight with the Cowboy faithful is a welcome distraction.
OSU and NCAA Notes
QB Draw – the anti-spread defense buster….Cowboy receiver LC Greenwood is nearing his return….Gundy confesses to overlooking UNT star Mason Fine as a recruit….Roll Tide to Roll Tires – CFB players now in NASCAR…..Broadcast info and weather predictions around today’s game
Enjoy Cowboy fans.

An angle to watch on the defense tonight.
Something worth noting, the slot cover guys (Mwaniki and Bernard) become a big factor vs. Tech. Not only to maintain the integrity of defense on WR screen passes horizontally, but should have significant role in the pressure game.

If Gundy just decides to farm and work at Bass Pro for free, this is the first guy I want OSU calling that’s last name doesn’t rhyme with “shmarroyo”.
Appalachian State coach Scott Satterfield received a 2-year extension thru 2023 season. Satterfield is 42-23 in 6 seasons w/Mountaineers
