2013 or 2014?

NewsOK’s Berry T. examines whether OSU is living a more 2013 or 2014-esque season.

The offense sloshed along, then finally Chelf returned to the lineup on Oct. 26 at Iowa State. Chelf didn’t light up the Cyclones, but he eventually caught fire and OSU’s offense became lethal. The Cowboys scored 58, 52, 42, 38 and 49 over five games, and OSU became the Big 12’s best team. Only an inexplicable Bedlam loss kept OSU out of the Fiesta Bowl.

That’s what OSU fans are hoping for. A quarterback change bringing a change of fortune.

Just don’t expect a quarterback change Saturday at Kansas. Chelf was a fifth-year senior in 2013. This is more like 2014. The options are not that experienced to replace Cornelius. Spencer Sanders has been on campus since June. Dru Brown since July. [NewsOK]

I think 2018 doesn’t fit either shoe – this offense has far more going for it than the 2014 variety (see The Justice League and a better offensive line) but I agreee with Tramel’s point: Dru Brown may have a hard time playing Jimmy Chitwood after getting here late from Hawai’i.

The Benefit of the Doubt

As OSU lines up for (hopefully) a slow stretch in the schedule, let’s give this team some time to hit its stride.

Still, let’s allow this thing to play out a bit. The Cowboys should win each of the next three weeks: at Kansas, home against Iowa State, at Kansas State. That’s a stretch that allows for further tweaks on offense, as well as for more conventional offenses to contend with on defense. Truth is, nobody else on the schedule will present quite the same issues as Texas Tech’s offense, in terms of the quick and short passes, essentially this OSU defense’s anti-venom.

After this three-game stretch, the schedule becomes telling, beginning with a visit from Texas, which is dominant on defense and seemingly improving on defense. Then the Cowboys close with three of its final four games on the road: at Baylor, at Oklahoma, West Virginia, at TCU. Those games will determine whether the Pokes’ bowl trip is decent or disappointing. [GoPokes]

It’s hard to recover from the gut punch of last week but if there’s any consolation – we might all agree that college football is better than no college football. And heck, maybe Gundy and the gang will hit a stride – Cornelius will have a chance to build some confidence, Knowles will develop the capacity to sack a quarterback in two seconds a way to cover up some receivers for a few seconds, and the offensive line can work on some pass pro.
