Daily Bullets (Sept. 8): Sanders’ Rushing Opens Up Games for Pokes

Even after two games, much of the talk around STW is about who’s taking snaps at QB.

The college football was very good on Saturday. And we haven’t even reached the premiere months yet. Also, I don’t know whether I’m excited that Texas got it handed to them in their own house or disappointed that they weren’t ranked No. 3 when OSU does the same in two weeks.

Bullets Rundown

• QB1 on lockdown
• Spencer’s rushing changes games
• Dru Brown has a role

Scores

• FB: OSU 56, Other Cowboys 14

OSU Bullets

• That QB1 job is all ? up, says Bill Haisten.

Fans seemed to appreciate a blowout experience in the first home game of the season, but there really was only one revelation: that Sanders does seem to have a tight hold on the starting quarterback role.

There also was a reminder: that Wallace is a tremendously gifted wide receiver. [Tulsa World]

I mean, yes, of course. But it felt like we learned that more last week at Oregon State than we did this week against McNeese. I am glad, however, that Gundy isn’t going full Eddie Sutton and pulling dudes after one or two mistakes. Obviously that wouldn’t happen in the same way in football, but it doesn’t seem like there’s any modicum of a QB race still lingering (and there shouldn’t be).

• Spencer’s rushing opened up the game, says Scott Wright.

But when Sanders went on the attack with his running ability, everything opened up. Still, it was unexpected to see the OSU starter taking off on so many runs in a mismatch where protecting his health would be paramount. [NewsOK]

I don’t disagree here, but I think it kind of just is what it is. Whereas last year OSU didn’t want to run Corn because they didn’t feel like they could afford to go to QB2, I think they’re more willing to do it this year because QB2 is pretty good. Also, Corn running seemed to be a derivative of scheming. Sanders running seems to just be part of who he is as a player.

• Enjoyed this from Kyle C. on why Dru Brown matters.

Dru Brown’s play through a quarter and some change at least proved that Oklahoma State is in good shape depth-wise at the most important position on the field.

Let’s face it, Spencer Sanders has taken a couple too many hits for my liking through two weeks of play, and it’s somewhat rare for a starting QB to navigate a 12-plus game season unscathed. Excuse me while I got frantically knock on every piece of wooden furniture in my house.

The point is that there is a long season ahead of us, and if the Cowboys have to rely on Dru Brown for a series or a quarter or a game, it looks like they are in good hands. [PFB]

Does … OSU have more depth at QB than it does at RB?

• Good stuff here on the importance of the redshirt year for Spencer Sanders.

• FB recruits who were in attendance at the game on Saturday.

• My 10 thoughts on OSU’s blowout win.

• Gundy thinks the media is tired and needs to go home and get some rest.

• 13 teams are averaging 50+ after two games. Did not expect to see Maryland atop this list.

• Lol!

• This is great. Always enjoy hearing Tylan talk.

• I was asking for this at home.

• This honestly probably isn’t far off.

• Kansas, wow.

• These are worse than I imagined!

• A lot of work here for 2 yards.

Non-OSU Bullets

• This on Keith Olbermann and DP was terrific. Loved it.
