Daily Bullets (September 4) – Rating the Running Back Group, A Calvin Bundage Comp
Over, Under, or Properly-Rated
Mark Cooper astutely observed that the Oklahoma State running back crew, for all of it’s adoring fans, may be underrated.
The running backs might be underrated
Justice Hill tore off the fourth-longest run in OSU history (92 yards) and didn’t play a snap after the first quarter.
LD Brown had a 77-yard touchdown of his own in his first career 100-yard night.
J.D. King quietly averaged 6.5 yards per carry.
And Chuba Hubbard in open space lived up to the billing when he juked his way to a 54-yard catch-and-run score.
Not many teams can boast both a potential All-American running back at first string and the depth to go four-deep at the position. It’s a good problem to have, but good luck to Mike Yurcich figuring out how to utilize all of these backs in a closer game. [TulsaWorld]
For proper context – who was OSU’s third running back in 2015? The answer is either Raymond Taylor or Rennie Childs. The year before that? Walk-on Raymond Taylor. What an amazing turnaround.
Bundage Comps
If you were to compare Calvin Bundage to anybody who’s played college football in the state (of late), who would you compare him against?
In February 2016, it was a significant recruiting victory for the Cowboys.
In September 2018, Bundage may be on the verge of becoming for OSU what Eric Striker was for the 2015 Sooners — a playmaking linebacker and a dynamic, disruptive pass-rush force.
The same Bundage who was a 178-pound Santa Fe senior safety now is a 220-pound Cowboy junior. On third-and-long situations during the Missouri State opener last week, he would slide from his outside linebacker position to defensive end. [TulsaWorld]
The recruiting comparison I’d throw Bundage up against is Kevin Peterson – considered OU and head down the road. And if Bundage can get heat on the quarterback regularly, he’ll have a similar impact on OSU’s defense.
