Former OSU Hooper Mason Cox Leads AFL Team to Grand Finals
In the middle of the night, Mason Cox dominated an Australian rules football game in front 94,959 people at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. That’s about seven times the capacity of Gallagher-Iba Arena.
Cox, a former basketball player at Oklahoma State, led his Australian Football League team to the Grand Finals, as Collingwood defeated Richmond 97-58.
Cox had three goals and a behind (19 points) to send the Magpies to their first AFL Grand Final in seven years. All three of Cox’s goals came in the second quarter where the Australian fans burst into chants of U-S-A.
Here’s the report from an Australian news service.
Once again, the chants erupted. This time it echoed around the stadium in one of the moments of the entire finals series. While Collingwood’s stunning onslaught over the Tigers was the main story, it was Mason Cox who was the hero.
His incredible quarter saw him kick three goals, take six marks — three of which were contested — and bring more swagger to the game than anyone since Dermott Brereton in the 80s. [News.Com.Au]
“We’re seeing the future of the game perhaps,” said one announcer during the festivities.

Mason Cox's second quarter was something to behold. He didn't stop there either, with the demanding leads + towering marks continuing until the final siren. #FOREVER pic.twitter.com/6ugutrfsQN

Cox’s story is quite incredible. Somehow at 6-10, Cox didn’t play basketball in high school, but rather soccer. He started his collegiate basketball career as a member of the OSU women’s practice squad before eventually walking on to the men’s team. He was on the men’s team from the 2011-12 to 2013-14 seasons.

Up next for Cox and Collingwood is the Super Bowl of Aussie rules football, the AFL Grand Final on at 11:30 p.m. central time on Sept. 28 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Need a refresher on what the heck Australian rules football is? (You’re not the only one) Here’s a video that helped me get a general idea of what was happening.
