Fua Leilua Explains Decision to Leave OSU
Just before the start of fall training camp, it was reported that 2017 defensive tackle signee Fua Leilua would not be joining the team for the fall and had left the Cowboy football program before his career in Stillwater ever began.
Details about Leilua’s situation were scarce, but he provided some insight to Pistols Firing about his decision after having recently opted to join the Utah State football program.
“Family was the main reason,” Leilua said. “What I can say is being here (in Utah) is easier on my wife to be around her father with. Also, Utah State was just a better fit as a father and a husband because my wife will be surrounded by other married couples with children. It’s an easier transition than it was for us to move to Oklahoma.”
Leilua, being a newlywed and with a newborn baby, explained his nuanced decision very simply, calling it a “tough” one because of the program he was walking away from in Stillwater. But ultimately, he did what he felt was best for his family. And in addition to finding a new situation that was closer to home and a better fit, OSU gained a fan from afar.
“I enjoyed OSU while I was there and have nothing but love for the program. As hard as it was for me to leave it was for the best,” Leilua said. “I wish Oklahoma State the best and hope they achieve the Big 12 championship! Go Pokes!”
