STILLWATER — Steve Lutz has a signature win in Stillwater.

Oklahoma State beat No. 9 Iowa State 74-68 on Tuesday night in Gallagher-Iba Arena. It was a tense finish, but the Cyclones never led, as the Cowboys bounced back from a 32-point loss in Lawrence this weekend to earn their first win against a team ranked in the top 10 of the AP Poll since Jan. 15, 2022.

OSU had a 14-point lead at halftime. The Cyclones whittled that down to four a few times in the game’s final minutes, but Arturo Dean scored four of his 14 points in the game’s final minutes to ice the win. Dean was magnificent, also adding four rebounds, four assists and seven (seven!) steals to his line

With the Cowboys draining clock, Dean hit a jumper coming off a screen, pushing OSU’s lead to 70-62 with 54 seconds to play. Iowa State got two offensive rebounds on its next possession before paying it off with a dunk with 35 seconds to play. The Cowboys got loose on a breakaway and rather than chewing clock with a six-point lead, Chi Chi Avery went for an exclamation point but was called for a charge. Tamin Lipsey hit a layup with 11 seconds to play, and the Cyclones called a timeout.

Dean got the ball and was fouled on the inbounds pass and hit both free throws to push the lead back to 72-66. Lipsey got another layup with four seconds left. Bryce Thompson was running out of options to get the ball in bounds, but he was able to hit Abou Ousmane over the top. Ousmane finished the game with a dunk, and the students flooded onto the floor.

Ousmane’s dunk put a bow on what was a terrific day. He finished with a game-high 25 points on 11 shots. He also six rebounds and four steals. He hit three 3-pointers, the most of any Cowboy.

OSU built its first-half lead on turning the Cyclones over and bullying them down low.

Iowa State came in averaging 11.5 turnovers a game but had 11 after just 20 minutes. The Cowboys turned those turnovers into 15 points. OSU finished the game with a 24-10 advantage in points off turnovers.

The Cowboys scored 18 of their 40 first-half points in the paint and finished the game with a 36-28 advantage in the stat. Ousmane and Patrick Suemnick played at center for the Cowboys in the first half and combined to score 18 points on 7-for-9 shooting.

Thompson and Avery joined Ousmane and Dean as Cowboys in double figures. Thompson scored 11 — with seven of those coming in the second half. Avery added 10, hitting a pair of 3s.

The Cowboys are 3-0 in home games following 20-point losses this season.

OSU is back to .500 at 14-14. The Cowboys are back on the road this weekend. They play Baylor at 7 p.m. Saturday in Waco.
