For the first time in his tenure, Mike Gundy’s team has lost six games in a row.

After a lengthy weather delay at halftime, Oklahoma State eventually fell to Arizona State 42-21 on Saturday at Boone Pickens Stadium during the Cowboys’ homecoming. At 3-6, the Pokes still haven’t won a Big 12 game while losing all six conference matchups to this point. And with only three games left on the schedule, OSU needs to win out to extend Gundy’s bowl streak to 19 years.

Before halftime was extended because of storms in Stillwater, the Sun Devils went to the locker room with a 21-14 lead thanks to Cam Skattebo’s one-yard touchdown run with 20 seconds left in the half. ASU led the whole way, though, after scoring on its opening drive with a 22-yard pass from Sam Leavitt to Jordyn Tyson.

The Cowboys were shutout in the first quarter before Brennan Presley barely got across the goal line on 4th-and-1 to tie the game 7-7. ASU immediately answered, though, when Leavitt hit Skattebo for a 50-yard TD. Skattebo tallied 153 rushing and 121 receiving yards in the game. The last Big 12 player to reach the century mark as both a rusher and receiver was OSU running back Ollie Gordon, who was responsible for the Cowboys’ second TD on Saturday with a two-yard run. Gordon finished with 25 rushing yards on 11 attempts, averaging 2.3 yards a carry.

The Sun Devils really took over after the weather delay with 28 unanswered points after Gordon’s score. Kyson Brown ran for a seven-yard TD for the only points of the third quarter. Brown then found the end zone again in the fourth but not until after the quarter started with another hookup between Leavitt and Skattebo, this time for 36 yards.

Down 42-14 in the fourth, freshman Maealiuaki Smith made his college debut at quarterback for OSU. In his first possession, Smith led the Cowboys down the field for a 49-yard drive that reached the end zone and halted ASU’s scoring run. Sesi Vailahi capped the drive with an 11-yard TD run. Smith didn’t see the field again, though, as the Sun Devils drained the clock on the following possession.

The Cowboys will travel to Fort Worth next to play TCU on Saturday. A loss then would officially erase any hopes of a bowl game for OSU.
