James Washington is Oklahoma State’s 9th Unanimous All-American Ever

Published

on

James Washington can’t stop winning awards. Last week, he became Oklahoma State’s 40th All-American. This week, he became Oklahoma State’s 13th consensus All-American. And on Wednesday, he became Oklahoma State’s ninth unanimous All-American.

What do all of those terms mean? I’m glad you asked.

There are the five organizations that make up the consensus and unanimous selections. They all create their own All-American lists so you could feasibly be on one but not the other. If you’re on one of them, you’re an All-American. If you’re on three of them, you’re considered a consensus All-American. If you’re on all five, you’re unanimous.

Washington was named to all five teams with the final one coming from the AFCA on Wednesday (where Mason Rudolph was also named to the second team).

Here’s a look at the other consensus and unanimous All-Americans in OSU history.

Year Player Consensus Unanimous
1944 Bob Fenimore Yes No
1945 Bob Fenimore Yes Yes
1977 Terry Miller Yes Yes
1985 Leslie O’Neal Yes Yes
1988 Hart Lee Dykes Yes No
1988 Barry Sanders Yes Yes
1997 Alonzo Mayes Yes Yes
2008 Dez Bryant Yes No
2009 Russell Okung Yes Yes
2010 Kendall Hunter Yes No
2010 Justin Blackmon Yes Yes
2011 Levy Adcock Yes No
2011 Justin Blackmon Yes Yes
2013 Justin Gilbert Yes No
2017 James Washington Yes Yes

One note: There have been eight players that have been unanimous All-Americans in nine different seasons (Justin Blackmon was a unanimous AA in both 2010 and 2011, thus the discrepancy in terminology you might see — eight vs. nine).

Dez was left off the FWAA All-American team in 2008 for … Jarrett Dillard. Dez had 87 catches for 1,480 yards and 19 TDs in the Big 12. Dillard had 87 catches for 1,310 yards and 20 TDs in Conference USA. ?

There are also some interesting names not on the list. Rashaun Woods and Thurman Thomas immediately come to mind. Also some bar trivia sure to win you a drink: Mark Moore and Quinn Sharp are the only three-time All-Americans in Oklahoma State history.

Regardless, what Washington has done this year and throughout his career has been astonishing. From no-name recruit to unanimous All-American. Just the eighth human being to do so in Oklahoma State football history.
