Mike Gundy Says Mike Yurcich Will Get Multiple Head Coaching Offers

Is Mike Yurcich really going to be a head coach? Is that going to be a thing that happens over the next few weeks? As I noted on Saturday, the track record is there for Oklahoma State offensive coordinators.

Larry Fedora went 11-2 with UNC this year. Dana Holgorsen went 7-5 with West Virginia. Todd Monken took Southern Miss to an 9-4 record from 0-12 just a few years ago. It’s not an accident. But Yurcich? Really?

“Nobody calls and asks for permission anymore about anything; 1-800-hire-coach-Gundy’s coaches is in effect,” Mike Gundy hilariously told the Oklahoman. “We’ve already fielded a few calls. The phone call is always nice, but it’s not really necessary anymore. Things happen really fast with the world we live in.”

So that quote was funny but not necessarily surprising. What he said next was surprising though.

“Mike is going to get the opportunity to interview for maybe more than one head coaching job,” Gundy said. “I think he’s a really good prospect and a bright young mind in our profession. At some point, and I’m speaking for him now, you would have to ask him, I’m guessing that he would like to be a head coach at some point.

“Where that would be, and what school would pursue him, and the fit with the right time for his family would be up to him. When we have success, we’re going to have coaches that are up for other jobs. It’s just part of the business.”

I know many of you would like to see him go. And that’s fine. It happens. But OSU’s offense was pretty good this year on a national level. Maybe that’s going to happen if Gundy is in charge no matter the offensive coordinator. Maybe not. But it does appear as if Yurcich is going to get some head coaching buzz in December which is not something I thought I’d be typing about 13 months ago.
