NFL Update: Marcell Ateman Could Make Debut Sunday, Lenzy Pipkens Waived

It was an up-and-down week for several former Pokes.

There is plenty to get into following a wild Week 10 in the league. But let’s start with a former Cowboy who may finally get his shot on the field in Week 11.

Marcell Ateman Eyeing NFL Debut

Marcell Ateman’s draft day fall was surprising. After being projected as high as first round pick shortly after bowl season, a poor 40-yard dash, and otherwise unimpressive NFL Combine showing, saw him drop all the way to the seventh round where he was picked by the Raiders.

But it appears the former all-Big 12 wideout may be ready to see the field for the first time this Sunday when the Raiders head to Glendale to take on the Arizona Cardinals.

Three weeks after the Raiders traded Amari Cooper to the Cowboys, they are now without Martavis Bryant who is expected to miss extended time due to a PCL injury in his left knee. Jordy Nelson is also dealing with a knee injury that saw him leave Oakland’s 20-6 loss to the Chargers. He is questionable for Sunday.

It appears things may now be opened up for Ateman to finally make his NFL debut.

Ateman was cut but the Raiders prior to the start of the season and had been on Oakland’s practice squad before the trade of Cooper to Dallas facilitated his promotion to the active roster.

Lenzy Pipkins Waived by the Detroit Lions

Former OSU cornerback Lenzy Pipkens appeared in just 12 snaps on special teams during the Lions’ 34-22 loss to the Bears. On Monday, the team announced that they had waived Pipkins.

Pipkins signed as an undrafted free agent with the Packers in 2017 and was key contributor before being traded, and subsequently waived by the Colts and being claimed off of waivers by the Lions. He has appeared in three games and recorded 10 total tackles this season.

Roller Coaster Week for Dez

Just days after signing a one-year deal with the white-hot New Orleans Saints, Bryant left practice with a reported Achilles injury. His season appears over before it ever started.

But he did get some love from his new teammates.

As well as a fellow Poke.

Emmanuel Ogbah Gets to Matty Ice

The Browns broke a three-game skid under interim head coach Gregg Williams with a 28-16 win over the Atlanta Falcons. Ogbah did his part, compiling two total tackles, a TFL, and a QB hit .5 sack on Matt Ryan.

This brings Ogbah’s sack total to just 2.0 through through 10 games. He totaled 4.0 sacks in a injury-shorted season last year and got to the QB 5.5 times as a rookie.

Tre Flowers Still Learning

The rookie cornerback got another does of on-the-job training care of Brandin Cooks and the potent Rams offense. Flowers tallied a couple of solo grabs but took his fair amount of lumps as Cooks grabbed 10 of 12 targets for 100 yards.

I will say that this “block” by LA receiver Robert Smith was an iffy no-call as Flowers who was kept from getting to his man on this TD.

Pete Carroll talked about the lessons some of his young defenders (including Flowers) can learn from such a tough opponent.

“It’s important to them and to see that they can survive it and play well,” said Carroll “that’s a tremendous accomplishment that adds to the confidence particularly of the young guys. Tedric (Thompson) and Tre (Flowers), those guys and if Delano (Hill) gets out there too, it’s a big deal to those guys and they’re going to go out there and play like they’re the other guys they’ve played against, but they’ll also recognize who they’ve been up against when the game’s over and it will be valuable to them.”

Carson Received Honor, Set to Return from Injury

Chris Carson missed the Seahawks’ 36-31 loss to the Rams with a hip injury. But according to Seattle head coach Pete Carroll, he  “is going to be healthy this week,” ahead of the Thursday night matchup against Green Bay.

But he was recognized by the NFL Players Association for his off-the-field work.

VT was in Green Bay, In Spirit

Vincent Taylor was placed on IR by the Dolphins after his foot injury two weeks ago. But he still made sure to support his team as they played on the road against the Packers.

One-Liners

• Tyler Patmon got the start at right corner for injured A.J. Bouye during the Jaguars’ 29-26 loss to the Colts. He recorded one tackle.

• James Washington appeared in 79.3 percent of offensive snaps (46) during the Steelers’ 52-21 drumming of the Panthers but was not targeted once.

• Blake Jarwin appeared in a season-low three snaps on offense (as well as 10 on special teams) and did not record a start during the Cowboys’ 27-20 road win over the Eagles.
