Notebook: Oklahoma State Gets Biggest Bedlam Upset Since 1989

STILLWATER — Well … I picked the right one to go to. Before the season, when OSU asked for our credential list, I put in for the HBU game in November and this one. I knew I’d be in town for HBU, and I knew I’d find a way to be in town for this one.

After missing HBU because of some travel plans, and after the first few months Trae Young impersonating Steph Curry, this was appointment viewing for me. I was not disappointed. You know the drill here. Five thoughts posted, and here’s the rest of the notebook.

Let’s go.

• Clip’s haircut makes it look like he’s Kendall Smith’s brother or the very young nephew of Snoop.

• Trae Young doesn’t get “last player introduced” treatment. I thought that was interesting, and I have overanalyzed it for the last 10 hours.

• One of my favorite things about actually being at a game is seeing the 18-step handshakes starters have with players who never play. How did they go about choreographing all of that? When do they have time to do it? If you’re the reserve and you forget, are you replaced by another reserve? I have questions.

• Larry Reece reading the terms and conditions list as fast as he can remains one of the seven wonders of the world.

• The Remember the 10 shooting shirts were unreal. Had the names of all 10 men outlining the lettering. Fantastic look. Fully subscribed.

• Four different players guarded Young in the first 19 minutes of the game. They limited him to 14 points on 4 of 15 shooting and 4 turnovers. Related: Trae Young shot 24 times … in the second half!

• Young’s 39 FG attempts are a new Big 12 record, breaking Clarence Gilbert’s (!) record from 2001 when Missouri played Iowa State.

• OSU needs to be better than 57 percent from the FT line.

• No Power 5 player has hoisted more than 33 shots in at least the last eight seasons.

• Oklahoma State sold out new GIA for the 48th time. And I can attest … the crowd was unbelievable. The loudest moment (by far) was Solomon’s steal on Young and Shine’s dunk. It was ludicrously loud.

“Our fans are tremendous,” said Mike Boynton. “It’s taken them a while to start to see the work this team has put in. We know we have great fans and we know when they come in this building it makes it hard on other teams that come in here. We certainly hope that we can continue to build from there.”

• He’s here.

• There were an inordinate number of goaltends early in the game by Oklahoma State. I think all but one were pretty easy calls, but it was almost as if Boynton told them to be over-aggressive early to send a message.

• We gonna act like Young isn’t low-key going bald or nah?

• I’ll say this … It’s not difficult for me to not cheer at football games in the press box. I’ll give the occasional fist pump under the table or yelp, “He’s open,” but a lot of people do similar things. It is difficult to not cheer in GIA when it’s really rolling. Really difficult.

• Has anyone ever had a bigger swing in Bedlam games than Brady Manek?

• Both teams took exactly 82 shots.

• There were a surprising number of great moments between Solomon and Young in this game. He was by himself against Young in the corner early. He had a great steal at the end of the first half. Then the obvious diving steal in the second that led to the Shine dunk. He also had a sneaky steal against Young at the end of overtime. Does Mitchell Solomon own Trae Young?!

• I like that Boynton lets guys get into the rhythm of the game. That was one thing I always disliked about the way Eddie Sutton coached.

• Goat shoes.

• OSU might still stink in the half court when it doesn’t hit threes. This seemingly remains a problem, and I’m not totally sure what the answer is or if there is one. Related: OSU’s offense against a zone is 3-pointer, hope to get a board and another 3-pointer.

• OU started in man and went to zone. Then they went back to man after the zone was uber effective. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

• This was on Trae Young. Cold.

• Young shooting off the wrong foot is so weird. How does a human being even do that?

• OSU notched back-to-back home victories over OU for the first time since 2012 and 2013 and they have won three of the last four Bedlam games overall.

• The win is OSU’s biggest Bedlam upset since an unranked Cowboys squad took down No. 1 Oklahoma, 77-73, on Feb. 4, 1989 in GIA.

• This was cool.

• OSU gets the program’s 50th all-time win over a top-10 opponent.

• Yes.

• Somebody brought a bird call for Trae Young. I only heard it a few times, but it was amazing. Background: Young is deathly afraid of feathered creatures.

• Averette might actually be a starting PG in the Big 12. Is he? Is my judgement clouded? Am I delusional? Am I drunk on orange kool-aid?

• OU got 46 percent of available offensive rebounds. Not ideal.

• There’s not a defense for somebody shooting from 38 feet out. See: Warriors, Golden State and Young, Trae.

• Mark Titus, prophet? Here’s what he wrote about Young on January 3.

You are going to get sick of hearing about Trae Young before this season ends. I’m assuming that you’re reading this because you aren’t sick of Young just yet, but trust me when I say that by March you’ll be complaining about how the media thinks Young is God’s gift to basketball and you’ll be swearing that the best player on your favorite team is just as good as Young. [Ringer]

• Yankuba Abdul Jabar

• Carroll was great at keeping offensive possessions alive. He also looked like a crazy person with his Snoop hair and shirt untucked for most of the second half.

• Boynton was in the triple threat position for much of the second half. Pouring sweat, toweling himself off and slapping the floor. Put it in my veins!

• Re: The Waters block at the end of regulation. It was pretty bad.

• The title banners in GIA have which number title they were. There are currently 51, and they form a perfect square around the arena. Some poor soul is praying hard against No. 52 so he or she doesn’t have to rearrange them all to accommodate.

• Scott Sutton was out of his mind for most of the game. I loved it. He was so animated. Kendall Smith made a layup with 1:45 left in OT and gave a monster fist pump, and Sutton almost came unglued on him.

• That’s a lot of shots.

• Not sure I love the oop to Solomon with one minute left. But hey, Ws are Ws.

• It feels like a lot of Baker Mayfield frustration was being taken out in GIA on Saturday. I’m fine with that.

• This was awesome.

• OSU had 28 bench points. OU had 7. OSU had 19 assists. OU had 11. Trae giveth. Trae taketh away. Also, OSU led for 35:05 of the game.

• Awesome.
