The Cowboys’ coaching staff has had success recruiting Katy, Texas before, and the staff has gone back to the Houston suburb for a 2022 linebacker.

Ty Kana announced an Oklahoma State offer Wednesday. He hails from the same high school where OSU plucked running back Deondrick Glass and offensive lineman Cole Birmingham in recent years.

Here is a breakdown of the Pokes’ most recent offer.

Who is He?

Mike Gundy loves his multisport athletes, and Kana fits that mold and interestingly at that. An inside linebacker, Kana also participates in track and field where he runs the 100 and 200 and throws shot put and discus. Usually the 100s and 200s are left for running backs and wide receivers, and the throwing events are for linemen, but Kana is doing it all as a linebacker.

As a sophomore in 2019, Kana was the Texas District 19 6A Co-Newcomer of the Year, as Katy finished the season 11-2.

Others Involved

Kana has a solid offer sheet with Baylor, USC, Washington, Washington State, Virginia Tech, SMU and Kansas on it.

In the Rankings

He is the No. 348 player in the 2022 class, according to 247Sports. That puts him as the 10th-highest rated inside linebacker in the cycle and Texas’ No. 55 prospect.

OSU in 2022

OSU’s linebackers will be an interesting group in 2021 much less 2022. Malcolm Rodriguez, Amen Ogbongbemiga, Devin Harper and Calvin Bundage will all be seniors in 2020. That leaves youngsters Na’drian Dizadare and Kamryn Farrar as likely starters for the group (and maybe Trace Ford, who plays everywhere).

OSU is also adding four inside backers in its 2020 class in Lamont Bishop (junior college), Jeff Roberson, Cole Thompson and Mason Cobb. Jim Knowles’ system calls for a lot of versatility, so it’s sometimes hard to tell which guys will actually stay as inside linebackers.
