Oklahoma State Head Eric Morris Would Like to Get Someone on the Phone to Bring Back Bedlam

Eric Morris stepped to the mic for the first time as Oklahoma State’s head football coach on Monday, and he didn’t take long to kick up a little Bedlam beef.

During his opening remarks at his introductory press conference, Morris was describing what drew him to Stillwater over other Division-I job opportunities he’d gotten of late. He said it came down to two things — personal life and professional opportunities. In short, Stillwater is a place he wants to raise a family and Oklahoma State is a place you can win championships.

Building off of that, Morris drew applause from those in attendance with a little preemptive Bedlam smack talk.

“I just want to stress so much how proud I am to represent this university. How proud I am to represent this state. Cause any university south of here we don’t, no,” Morris said before giving the Sooners two thumbs down and making a raspberry noise. “We’re not even talking about, right?

“And I’d love to get on the phone with anybody that we know that can help us bring that game back, and if they’re asking if Coach Morris welcomes that game, I welcome it with open arms.”

The century-long rivalry was put on hold after Oklahoma left for the SEC, Oklahoma State winning the most recent episode in 2023. That was a long two years ago. Since then, OSU has won just two conference games and is 3-21 against Power Four teams. Oklahoma just finished a 10-2 season and is set to square off against Alabama in the opening round of the College Football Playoff.

Whether or not Morris can get the right person on the phone, the logistics of a Bedlam football happening any time in the near future are a bit complicated. While brass at both universities have worked to continue the rivalry in multiple sports, football scheduling is tough, especially with nonconference contracted games being scheduled far into the future.

“My answer has not changed on that — we’re not against playing that game,” Weiberg told a group of media after Morris’ comments. “It just has to work out with the schedule. They’ve got new scheduling parameters now. We’ll continue to have to work through when the timing is right.”

But give Morris his due credit. He’s confident, and he already knows how to win a room. Who knows, maybe he’ll get a chance to win a Bedlam game one of these days.
