Where Does Oklahoma State Rank Nationally Over Last 5/10 Years?
In the preseason, before the real stuff starts, I like looking backwards. Oklahoma State has obviously had one of the better programs in the country for the majority of Mike Gundy’s 11 years in Stillwater, but exactly how good has it been?
The goal here is what I call a 5/50 club. That is, 50 wins in five years. That’s legit. You’re a big boy program if you’re averaging 10 wins a year (including bowl games) over a five-year stretch. Oklahoma State has been in and out of it over the last few years but is currently on the outside.
Here’s a look.
| Team | Wins |
|---|---|
| Alabama | 61 |
| Florida State | 57 |
| Oregon | 56 |
| Ohio State | 55 |
| Clemson | 54 |
| Stanford | 54 |
| Michigan State | 53 |
| Northern Illinois | 53 |
| Boise State | 51 |
| Oklahoma | 50 |
| Baylor | 49 |
| Georgia | 49 |
| Louisiana State | 49 |
| Wisconsin | 48 |
| Notre Dame | 47 |
| Oklahoma State | 47 |
| Louisville | 46 |
| Houston | 46 |
| Cincinnati | 44 |
| Kansas State | 44 |
| Marshall | 44 |
| Southern California | 44 |
| Texas Christian | 44 |
| San Diego State | 43 |
| Toledo | 43 |
| UCLA | 43 |
Alabama is in rare air with the 5/60 club. Boise State has been in and out of that, but for a SEC team to currently be there is a joke (although it’s getting “easier” with the addition of a CFB Playoff game). Oklahoma State sits nicely here. Only 11 Power 5 teams are ranked ahead of it and that’s with the disaster of a 2014 year. That Oklahoma-Baylor range is what OSU should be shooting for generally.
Here’s a look at wins over the last 11 years (since the beginning of the Mike Gundy era).
| Team | Wins |
|---|---|
| Boise State | 121 |
| Ohio State | 121 |
| Alabama | 120 |
| Oregon | 114 |
| Oklahoma | 112 |
| Louisiana State | 111 |
| Texas Christian | 110 |
| Southern California | 107 |
| Wisconsin | 107 |
| Florida State | 105 |
| Florida | 104 |
| Georgia | 103 |
| Virginia Tech | 102 |
| Clemson | 101 |
| Texas | 99 |
| Brigham Young | 98 |
| Penn State | 96 |
| Michigan State | 95 |
| Missouri | 95 |
| West Virginia | 95 |
| Oklahoma State | 94 |
| Cincinnati | 93 |
| Houston | 93 |
| Nebraska | 93 |
| Northern Illinois | 93 |
| Auburn | 93 |
| Utah | 93 |
| Navy | 92 |
| Notre Dame | 90 |
That’s impressive considering where OSU started (at the bottom … am I doing this right?) More wins than Notre Dame over the last decade? What a world. Also, BYU! Houston! Cincinnati! The future of the Big 12 is bright (or something like that).
