OSU Drops to No. 11 in AP Poll despite Blowout Win

Published

One weekend of college football in in the books. We saw some slow starts, a few upsets and some down-to-the-wire thrillers. Luckily, Oklahoma State was in the driver seat for its season opener before the first quarter ended.

It’s always interesting to see how the preseason polls stand up after Week 1. Let’s take a look at the AP Top 25. Who moved up? Who dropped off? Were there any new additions?

In  a bit of a surprising change, especially around here, Oklahoma State drops from No. 10 in the preseason poll to No. 11, after blowing out Tulsa 59-24 at home.

Let’s see how the rest of this week’s poll shook out.

Who jumped up?

Clemson took it to Kent State for a 59-3 win which helped them leapfrop Florida State after its loss to Alabama. Penn State is now at No. 4 and USC dropped a couple spots after a slow start against Western Michigan.

Michigan put together a dominant defensive performance against No. 17 Florida (see below) and pushed Oklahoma State out of the top 10. Oklahoma gets the benefit of the doubt for shellacking UTEP at home and moves up from No. 7 to No.5.

Who dropped off?

Florida drops from No. 17 only five spots after getting bullied by Big Blue. Texas and West Virginia fall out of the top 25 after losing their season openers.

New faces

TCU climbed into the No. 23 spot after a 63-0 win over FCS opponent Jackson State and Notre Dame debuted at No. 24 after a 49-16 drumming of Temple.

Conclusion

Oklahoma State now sits at No. 11 in the AP, dropping one spot after a blowout win. What does that mean? It probably shows a little blueblood bias. What does drumming UTEP for you that drumming Tulsa doesn’t? UTEP is a Conference USA opponent that has averaged fewer than five wins the last five years. Tulsa is coming off a 10-win season in the American Athletic Conference.

What it really means? Not a lot. Oklahoma State is not going to get the benefit of the doubt. Continue winning and things take care of themselves. It’s definitely too early to get too worked up about it. This week’s game doesn’t provide much of a launching pad either.

In the Amway Coaches Poll, Oklahoma State made an equal yet opposite move, stepping from No. 11 to No. 10.
