Final Thoughts

A lot of this loss will be laid at the feet of Taylor Cornelius, and that’s how it goes when you’re QB1. But a few things are clear. OSU first and foremost beat itself a lot tonight. The Cowboys were penalized seven times for 63 yards in the first half and had at least that many missed opportunities. Several of those were on Cornelius but there is plenty of blame to go around.

The defense wasn’t good enough, especially on the back end. And the offensive line simply hasn’t performed up to expectations. Whether or not a QB change is in order — I think it is — OSU won’t be a ton more successful if it unloads both six-shooters at its boots.

Final: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 41: The Red Raiders were able to run out the clock by methodically gaining first downs as they had most of the second half.

4Q: 3:31: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 41: Another offensive drive fizzled out. Cornelius is now below 50 percent on his completions and is being lapped by a true freshman in Bowman.

4Q: 4:29: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 41: Demarcus Felton finds pay dirt for the second time after a 17-yard run. The rout is on.

4Q: 5:44: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 34: Tech cruises down the field, approaching 600 total yards (already 200 more on the day than OSU). The Red Raiders are able to chew up clock with an actual running game.

4Q: 10:30: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 34: Cornelius misses on a deep ball again, this time it’s picked off by Jordyn Brooks. There is still 10 minutes left in this game, but it feels pretty grim for the Cowboys.

4Q: 10:39: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 34: Another bad snap harpoons the play before it can get going. Cornelius follows that up with an near interception. Third and long.

4Q: 11:31: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 34: Missed field goal! That counts as a stop. Someone in a gray jersey needs to get in the end zone on this possession.

4Q: 11:31: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 34: Much ado about nothing. Tech decides to see if it can pull OSU offsides. Alan Bowman is no Aaron Rodgers with a hard-count.

4Q: 11:36: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 34: On third and 17, the Red Raiders get 16. Kliff leaves it in the hands of his true freshman for fourth and 1. This would be a huge stop if OSU can make a play.

End of 3rd Quarter | Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 34

3Q: 0:00: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 34: Taylor Cornelius aims for Tyron Johnson on a deep ball on third and 12, and it’s pretty badly under thrown. Pokes will kick the ball back to Tech with a three-score lead with 15 minutes remaining.

3Q: 1:11: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 34: Cornelius finds Wallace for 14 yards. Cowboys need 7 points on this drive to stay viable.

3Q: 1:25: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 34: Another sack. Trey Carter and Mike Scott get to Bowman. Tech settles for a field goal. A touchdown would have been daunting. Not’s just really dire.

3Q: 2:30: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 31: The Red Raiders are chewing up clock and yardage as the make it into the red zone with ease.

3Q: 4:51: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 31: Tylan Wallace fumbled the punt return. OSU’s running out of toes to shoot off. Tech ball.

3Q: 5:05: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 31: The Pokes get a much-needed stop. On third and long, Mike Scott records the Cowboys’ first sack of the night.

3Q: 7:09: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 31: On third and 8, Tech holds the Cowboys to a field goal attempt. Ammendola missed his first kick this year and we are on our way to panic mode.

3Q: 8:19: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 31: The Cowboys start off with two chunk plays. Justice Hill picks up 37 yards and then the Oil Baron connects with Jalen McCleskey for 17.

3Q: 8:57: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 31: Tackling optional as two Cowboy defenders see Demarcus Felton to the end zone. Pokes now down two scores. This is a must-score possession for Cornelius and OSU.

3Q: 9:04: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 24: The Red Raiders and Alan Bowman continue to get what they want in the middle of the field. Timeout Tech on second and 10 at the OSU 27-yard line.

3Q: 10:51: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 24: OSU pays off the SportsCenter Top10 interception with a hapless three-and-out. Tech ball on its own 38-yard line. Let’s see if the defense has figured anything out.

3Q: 11:59: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 24: This is a big possession for Oklahoma State and Taylor Cornelius. We’ve learned a lot from the fifth-year senior so far in 2018, but now we’re going to find out how he leads the offense from behind.

3Q: 11:59: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 24: SHADES OF AMES. A.J. Green intercepts a would-be touchdown in the back right corner of the end zone. Pokes ball.

3Q: 13:16: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 24: Tech at the OSU 17, so much for making a stand out of the break.

3Q: 13:51: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 24: Missed arm tackle on the opening allows Dem Felton to go for 22 yards. He follows it up with a 14-yard run into OSU territory.

Halftime Thoughts

Taylor Cornelius has made some plays but continues to struggle with the deep ball, limiting what Oklahoma State can do on offense. The Pokes are averaging under 4 yards per carry and the offensive line has struggled to protect and run block against Tech’s defensive front.

OSU’s defense looks gassed and the Red Raiders have met little resistance moving down the field the last couple of drives. A stop on the opening drive of the second half will be crucial. You don’t want to go down two scores with the tempo Tech employs.

Oklahoma State is lucky to be down just 7 at this point. The Cowboys have shot themselves in the foot several times with penalties and missed opportunities. Let’s see if they run out of toes or ammo first.

Halftime |  Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 24

2Q: 0:12: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 24: OSU picks up a couple of plays but the drive stalls out after yet another missed deep ball and trip sack of Cornelius.

2Q: 1:40: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 24: Cowboy hold Texas Tech to a field goal, which feels like a win. OSU’s offense is going to have to take some pressure off of its defense.

This will be the biggest burden Cornelius has had to shoulder thus far. Time for some two-minute offense to see if OSU can get some points in before the half. Tech to receive to start the third.

2Q: 2:53: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 21: Tech getting whatever it wants on offense, down to OSU’s 13. Jim Knowles is getting a baptism by fire with his first taste of Big 12 offense.

2Q: 4:20: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 21: On third and 7, Bowman finds Ja’Deion for 15 yards. OSU called for substitution penalty. That’s seven penalties so far in the first half.

2Q: 7:15: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 21: Taylor Cornelius is sacked on second down and 4. Finds Jalen McCleskey for 8 yards but it’s not enough. Sinor back in for his second punt. Punt travels 45 yards and is fair caught by De’Quan Bowman. Ball back to Texas Tech to try to build on its lead.

2Q: 7:15: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 21: Tech easily scored after multiple OSU penalties aided them in the red zone. Cowboys back on the wrong side of things and we are headed for shootout territory.

2Q: 8:03: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 14: Another penalty on OSU’s defense. Calvin Bundage called for holding gives the Red Raiders a first down and splits the difference to the goal line.

Not sure why Bundage has been left out there. Is obviously limited due to some type of injury and is less than his normally effective self.

2Q: 9:01: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 14: Pass interference on A.J. Green moves Tech into the red zone.

2Q: 10:34: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 14: Bowman finds Seth Collins for 31 yards to ignite Tech’s drive.

2Q: 10:40: Oklahoma State 17 — Texas Tech 14: Justice Hill totes the rock up the middle and drags a defender 13 yards and onto pay dirt.

Good answer by OSU with 7 points off of the Tech turnover.

2Q: 10:59: Oklahoma State 10 — Texas Tech 14: Tylan Wallace cannot be stopped. Picks up 14 and forces 4 more out of the play.

2Q: 11:05: Oklahoma State 10 — Texas Tech 14: Cornelius rolls right, hits Jalen McCleskey for 22 yards.

2Q: 11:27: Oklahoma State 10 — Texas Tech 14: Jarrick Bernard continues to make headlines grabbing the first interception of Alan Bowman’s career.

2Q: 11:37: Oklahoma State 10 — Texas Tech 14: Thabo Mwaniki called for pass interference. Not a good start to this defensive possession for OSU.

2Q: 11:42: Oklahoma State 10 — Texas Tech 14: Hill tackled for a loss of 2. Tech takes over at its own 23. Pressure on the Cowboys defense now.

2Q: 11:56: Oklahoma State 10 — Texas Tech 14: Cowboys going for it on fourth-and-1, but call a timeout just before what would have been another false start on OSU.

You gotta think this is four-down territory. Don’t think OSU can afford to start trading FGs for TDs this early.

2Q: 13:39: Oklahoma State 10 — Texas Tech 14: Cornelius finds Tylan Wallace for another highlight reel catch on the sideline for 27 yards.

2Q: 14:01: Oklahoma State 10 — Texas Tech 14: Justice Hill takes a big hit and is instructed to the sidelines by the official.

2Q: 14:56: Oklahoma State 10 — Texas Tech 14: Tech runs the reverse to KeSean Carter who scampers into the end zone. Red Raiders take the lead. We’ll see if Taylor Cornelius can answer on this next drive.

End of 1st Quarter | Oklahoma State 10 — Texas Tech 7

1Q: 1:10: Oklahoma State 10 — Texas Tech 7: Tech moving down the field with ease. Down to the OSU 9-yard line. Tech’s tempo nullifying OSU’s pass rush.

1Q: 2:00: Oklahoma State 10 — Texas Tech 7: A bobbled snap and lost yardage forces a Matt Ammendola field goal. 18-straight for Philly.

Eight of Taylor Cornelius’ 13 throws have been to Tylan Wallace. No other receiver has more than one target.

1Q: 3:07: Oklahoma State 7 — Texas Tech 7: Larry Williams and Teven Jenkins called for chop blocking. 15 yards.

Tylan Wallace immediately picks up the difference.

1Q: 3:37: Oklahoma State 7 — Texas Tech 7: Cornelius finds Wallace for 26 yards on a toe-tapper at the sideline. OSU hurries to the 28-yard line of Tech, forcing Kliff Kingsury to call a timeout.

PLEASE LET THIS HAPPEN.

1Q: 4:30: Oklahoma State 7 — Texas Tech 7: Hitch my wagon to the Jelani Woods train. Cornelius finds the QB-turned-Cowboy Back for 19 yards on a crossing route.

1Q: 4:50: Oklahoma State 7 — Texas Tech 7: A.J. Green got lost with Tech’s different look up front and let his man waltz wide-open into the end zone. Easy catch and throw between Alan Bowman and T.J. Vasher. We’re knotted up at 7 each.

1Q: 4:56: Oklahoma State 7 — Texas Tech 0: Tech trucking down the field with Alan Bowman connection on four-straight passes. Timeout. Red Raiders facing a second-and-5 on the Cowboys’ 12-yard line.

1Q: 7:35: Oklahoma State 7 — Texas Tech 0: Cornelius takes some pressure, backpedals and finds J.D. King for a 23 yards and a score. Pokes on the board first.

1Q: 8:12: Oklahoma State 0 — Texas Tech 0: Justice Hill takes the rock 35 yards, preceding an out to Tyron Johnson for 11 more. Injury timeout on the field. OSU now at the Texas Tech 28-yard line.

1Q: 8:32: Oklahoma State 0 — Texas Tech 0: Cornelius finds Tylan Wallace for 11 yards and then lowers his shoulder and eats up 14 yards of his own.

1Q: 9:00 Oklahoma State 0 — Texas Tech 0: Larry Williams and Jelani Woods take turns with the most useless false-start penalties in the history of football.

1Q: 9:22: Oklahoma State 0 — Texas Tech 0: Tech punter Dominc Panazzolo pins OSU at its own 1-yard line. Specialists showing out early.

1Q: 9:57: Oklahoma State 0 — Texas Tech 0: Tech called for blocking down field. Now third down and 19 after the 15-yard penalty. Malcolm Rodriguez saves the first down with an open field tackle.

1Q: 11:11 Oklahoma State 0 — Texas Tech 0: Kenneth Edison-McGruder comes out of no where to seemingly save a first down with his torpedo tackle, but measurement and spot moves the chains.

1Q: 13:58 Oklahoma State 0 — Texas Tech 0: A.J. Green defensive holding penalty aids the Red Raiders’ move down the field.

1Q: 14:10: Oklahoma State 0 — Texas Tech 0: Oklahoma State turns in an opening-possession three-and-out. On the bright side, a returning Zach Sinor boots it 67 yards, pinning Tech at its own 13.

Oklahoma State welcomes Texas Tech for a night game in BPS. I’ll be with you all evening to keep you abreast of all the biggest plays, best tweets and rushed takes I can muster.

As always, the comment section is open, so jump in. First question: Hypothetically, let’s say Mike Yurcich and Kliff Kingsbury trade jobs this spring? Do Tech fans count that as two things OSU stole from them?
